I have 3 proxmox nodes, each with a 500g ssd for boot and another 1tb which I want to use for ceph.
Its recommended to have a separate 10g network for this, which is where the problem starts. Right now i have CRS Mikrotik switch with two sfp+ ports, and i have already ordered two single port connectx-2 cards which I was going to use to have a faster connection between one node containing my NAS, and another which is the one that reads off it the most (plex, etc.).
Now I'm debating changing this. I have 3 options because I dont want to spend too much money on this:
- Don't have a separate network for ceph, and get a third sfp+ card for my third server + a cheap-ish 8 port sfp+ switch from tp-link for 140euros, and connect it to my main Mikrotik switch. Both ceph and the nas communication would happen over one single port/nic.
- Alternatively, I could do the same as above but get another two sfp+ nics (or just 2 dual ports) and have a separate network for ceph, and also have a fast nas connection. This would be the most expensive.
- Cheapest option: there is this 40euro switch on aliexpress which has two sfp+ ports and 4 2.5G rj45 ones. Could I have two nodes use 10g links and one have a 2.5G on the same ceph network? or would that cause problems? This would be a separate network. Servethehome reviewed what is basically that switch and came away positive.
I just received my supermicro x9dr3-f motherboard, which has two cpu 8pin connectors for power, while the power supply I was going to use only has 1. I'm only going to be using a single e5 2667 v2 with it, do I really need to buy a new psu?
The cpu has a 130W tdp.
Hello, I'm looking for a budget switch, second hand or new, which has the following:
- At least 2, preferrably 4, sfp+ ports.
- At least 2 2.5G or 10G rj45 ports.
- At least 16 1G rj45 ports.
- Under or around 300 euro.
Im in europe, so finding a nice switch used is hard. Most ship from america with loads of import tax and shipping costs.
I currently have a Mikrotik CRS326-24G-2S+RM switch, which has 24 gigabit dj45 ports and 2 sfp+ ones. This is almost enough, and I was just thinking of getting this random unmanaged switch from amazon which could meet what I want.
I have two proxmox nodes which I want to connect with sfp+ to my network, and then have 2.5G to any pc that needs to access the NAS on one of them. I would have one node connected to the Mikrotik switch, which would connect to the other switch, which would then connect to my other node, all with sfp+. Would that work?
As far as I know, the only main reason to have a high clock speed CPU in a server is for game servers, at least for me. (And also for a router, but that doesont really apply here).
My basic question is this:

- 8 Cores, 3.3Ghz Base, 4 Boost

- 6 Cores, 3.5Ghz Base, 3.8 Boost
Which should I get? All 3 have a 130W tdp.
For background this is for a new server I want to build alongside two I already have, which are in a proxmox cluster. This new one will join them.
One of the servers has Dual 2670 v2s and the other has a single 1230 v2.
A 2670 only has a 2.5 base and 2.2 boost, which is why im wondering if having another server with less cores but a higher clock speed would be beneficial for certain tasks.
Currently I run things like plex, nextcloud, homeassisstant etc, and game servers.
