Personal Accounting: Do You Do It? How?

Hi all,

So I started YNAB a few years ago, and found myself enjoying the accounting aspects more than the budgeting aspects. When the price kicked up, I thought I'd explore the personal accounting space some more.

So I started using GNUCash and learned about double entry accounting. Which was fun sometimes, less fun other times. I liked that I could use Git with the save file, didn't like entering every. single. transaction. manually. I could never figure out the bank sync.

Eventually, I switched to Quicken, and have been mostly OK with it so far (on Mac). Though I'm still not used to using Reports and the like for personal analytics, the mobile app is clunky, and I occasionally run into wonky bugs with sync or with the general app.

How do you all go about tracking funds in accounts, if at all?

Thanks!

We must end the tyranny of printers in American life
  • Can confirm that bootleg printer ink is a thing. It used to be all I used. While sites dedicated to it off Amazon doesn’t cut it.

But as someone else pointed out, manufacturers have been adding “DRM” to cartridges in more recent years. Even in older printers, I will get complaints doubting the authenticity of the cartridges I was putting in.

  • What's the biggest docker footgun you've experienced?
  • Interesting — coming from the Linux world where docker is an 'apt install' away, I struggled with docker installation on Mac and settled on their client because of various “gotchas” I saw online. And even then got pissed because the client overwrote my local 'kubectl' bin.

    Guess I’ll have to reevaluate.

  • Losing Things Evokes a Physical Stress Response

ADHD person here. And I’m just so drained from spending hours meticulously looking for (essentially) $20.

It’s not about money — I’ll live without the $20. I’ve just lost so many important things in my life so many times that it drives me absolutely fucking insane. Seething, heart thumping, muscle flexing rage.

And what makes things worse is that I take measures to prevent this from happening. So when I still lose things, the failure just cuts twice as deep.

Not looking for any solutions atm. Just venting to folks who might get it while I physically recover and let the loss go. Thanks all.

Personal Cloudless Location Tracking App? (Hero's Path)

    Hi all,

Does anyone know of any apps that track your location over time and map it so that you can see where you were at a given time? Preferably one that doesn't upload any of this information to a/the cloud?

I'm a forgetful person and often wonder "what was I don't last Tuessday?" or "When did I get home?" or "How long was I at X?". Sometimes I also just want to contribute to things like OpenStreetMaps for less mapped areas (though I know this requires very frequent pings).

I used to use this feature using Google Location History but stopped because I decided I didn't want to give them any more of my data than necessary.

If anyone plays Legend of Zelda BOTW or TOTK, I'm thinking of it as a sort of personal "Hero's Path Mode".
