Could we please add a rule to ban musk spam?
  • Twitter is very much active, it is the first place all political discussions happen. It is where the Israel attacks unfolded. It is where every big figure has an account and share their viewpoints.

It is also where you often see two sides having very different viewpoints argue, something in which it is unique - since by design it tries to allow different ideas even if you don't agree with them.

But not so with Lemmy - which is extremely left centric, and harbours so much hatred against people, censorship, and the ostrich syndrome of burying you head in the sand, that this post to censor Elon and this amazing claim that Twitter is dead gets so much attraction. Case in point how I predict when near 100% accuracy that this comment will be voted down and buried.

  • Did we kill Linux's killer feature?
  • I mean yeah. I mean wtf.

I mean, if I install something compiling from source, I would not expect anyone else to manage it, right? I mean why would anyone expect that flatpak snap etc. all get managed automatically, they even forget how they installed something, it is so ridiculous.

  • How many people actually dropped Reddit for Lemmy?
  • Well I did, but the community in Lemmy is suffocatingly left leaning for me. So I had to go back to Reddit for fresh air. (Never have I thought I'd go back to Reddit because some other community is even more left, but here we are.)

  • Drag shows are protected by 1st Amendment, performers tell federal judge
  • The topic was first amendment. Stay in context. Either acknowledge that it's not a good argument, or accept that they are "the same as drag show" within that context.

Not even sure what the Jesus thing is about, but I suppose everything is being allowed under the pretext of first amendment so why not. It sounds like an enactment which is a - what did people call it - an "art form".

  • Linux 6.6 To Better Protect Against The Illicit Behavior Of NVIDIA's Proprietary Driver
  • It's sad to see the 100500th confrontation between the people who have never contributed to the kernel, yet they want to deprive others of using their existing GPU with Linux and instead force them to buy a new GPU. This screams of of being elitist and haughty but I just don't care any longer. Too tired of hatred, aggression, animosity and verbal attacks. This has really propelled Linux, oh, wait, it's only shown what kind of people represent Open Source.

  • Fuck it, give me your most OVERRATED Distros
  • Manjaro is a really good distro to start with. It has very nice defaults including the correct zsh plugins. Should make your transition to Arch whenever the time comes very smooth. It does have a bad reputation because they don't seem to manage it well (e.g. keys keep expiring), and the said defaults are implemented in a very hacky way (if you see the code). Also they follow a delayed release which is really unnecessary given Arch is stable already; and in fact the delay can cause issues if you use AUR (which you will, eventually discover and learn about and love).

  • When do you know you need a larger disk?

As SSD is getting cheaper, I find myself keep thinking that I should buy a bigger one.

But this isn't really a decision based on actual need - and I can tell my mind is playing tricks to convince me that "you need to get it because what if you want to install a lot of large games".

I'm thinking may be a reasonable criteria instead is to see my current utilization, and buy one only if the utilization exceeds a percentage - say ">80% disk util=> buy a new one" as a rule?

What is your criteria to get a bigger disk?

    Limit VRAM in Lutris

As I play Diablo 4, I see it take up ridiculous amount of VRAM, upwards of 20GB.

The game doesn't have very good control over VRAM management, and I think it just doesn't free up any loaded texture if the VRAM size is large.

I use Lutris to run Battle.net client and Diablo.

Is there any way I can limit VRAM available to it from Wine, DXVK, or Lutris?

    3090 or 4090

    I have an RTX 2080ti.

I still play in 1080p 60Hz, and the 2080 is plenty. But I'm looking to train some ML models, and the 11GB VRAM is limiting for that.

Thus, I plan to buy a new one. Also I don't want a ML only GPU since I don't want to maintain two GPUs.

Since I'm upgrading, I need to think of future compatibility. At some point I will move to at least 2k, although still I'm not bought into 4k as any perceivable benefit.

Given all these, I wanted to check with folks who have either card, should I consider 4090?

AirBnB bans host for knowing the wrong people
www.vice.com They Bought a House With Plans to Airbnb. Then They Were Banned for Knowing the Wrong People

For Kristin Turner and her family, the short-term rental company's ban was as devastating as the appeal process was maddening.

AirBnB bans host for knowing the wrong people, without disclosing who the wrong person was, denies appeals with cookie cutter mails ("after careful consideration") every time.
