After ten years, it's time to stop making videos.
  • Tom seems like one of the most genuine people on the internet, he fact checks the crap out of everything (going out of his way to issue corrections when he is wrong - which just never happens) and produced exceptionally high quality and interesting content every damn week.

I’m slightly sad he’s giving up now only because I only discovered his channel a year or so ago and I’m not going to have new things to show my kids as they grow into an age of watching more educational content.

I can only wish him the best of luck with whatever comes next.

(Also, he deserves an MBE or something…)

  • YouTube: 5 ads the norm now?
  • Quick PSA: they don’t currently block VPNs, so you can sign up for an account in a cheap country (I picked Nigeria) and use a foreign currency debit card (I use Revolut) to get Premium for like £1.50 a month for my entire family.

If they close that loophole then I think I’ll be done with it, the ads make it basically unusable these days.

  • Has google stopped working for finding anything?
  • Hard disagree with that, DDG searches are accurate about 90% of the time that I use it (which as a web dev is quite a lot) if they aren’t hitting Google with the same term rarely wields any better results.

  • Inside the 'arms race' between YouTube and ad blockers / Against all odds, open source hackers keep outfoxing one of the wealthiest companies.
  • I went through a period of de-googling a couple of years ago. Swapping browser, mobile os, search engine, storage, maps, music, video purchases, voice assistant and even email service was relatively simple, there are alternatives out there which do the job just as well if not better than what Google offer.

The only exception is YouTube, yea there are individual sites that occasionally offer some of the videos I want (often with a subscription attached), there are some federated systems like NewPipe which have some videos but there is no one offering remotely the quantity or quality of what you can get on YouTube for free.

As the article states, it’s basically a monopoly at this point without a viable alternative.

  • They totally did that

The problem was that people weren’t really interested in any of it.

The UI was cluttered and messy to look at, none of it was as polished or natural to use as iOS or Android.

Plus there was no Google Maps, no Google Docs (and Office 365 wasn’t around to replace it), even that apps that were in the store felt pretty bad quality. I had Spotify on my iPhone and it was nearly flawless, when I switched to Windows Phone it kept cutting out or crashing or disconnecting from the mobile connection, it just wasn’t fully baked.

  • Gamers who have gamed for a long time
  • It is!

I picked it up at launch and it’s improved quite a lot over the last few years, better combat and skill trees, fewer bugs, better cops, the world is beautiful and the quest design and performance animation makes Starfield feel pretty antiquated.

It’s still not perfect but I’m on my second play through and I’m still having a good time, I’m very excited to see the new stuff in Phantom Liberty too.

  • Gamers who have gamed for a long time
  • I’m nearly 40, been playing since the old Commodore 64 days.

I’ve always loved games, but with a wife and kids I don’t have anywhere near as much time as I used to with them, which means I think quite a lot about what I want to play in the 6 hours or so a week that I can actually do it.

I feel like I’m in a minority in that I still love much of the AAA stuff - Cyberpunk and Baldur’s Gate 3 is my jam right now, I might get Spider-Man 2 when it drops in price a bit and I have more time.

I love indie games too but I don’t always have as much time as I want to invest in them, I did get through Bombrush Cyberfunk recently and it scratched a Jet Set Radio itch that I had long forgotten about.

So yea, I still love them but it’s partly because it’s just always been my hobby.

  • Tories heading for landslide election defeat, says Britain’s top pollster
  • Honestly their walk back of the net zero has made me never want to vote for them again.

The planet is fucked, at this point nothing else matters, we aren’t doing anything about it because Sunak is cosied up to fossil fuels and is too busy flying his private jet about.

  • I don’t think that’s too bad a list! The Nurburgring delay is a bit annoying but the fidelity of everything they’ve shown so far means that they’re going to take an age to make each one.

    I’m excited :)

  • Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?
  • This is how I do it.

I pay for Netflix, Prime (only really for the free shipping), Disney+, Apple TV+ and Spotify, if it’s not on any of these then I’m going to pirate it.

The whole exclusivity stuff is just rubbish, I get the reasoning but if you can’t make your content easily accessible then I just don’t want to pay for it.

  • Are Internet boards and Forums dead
  • the more traditional style of forums are still around too.

They’re very rare these days though. It’s a whole lot easier to keep all your interests in one place rather than heading off to one forum for gaming chat and another for programming chat and another for gardening chat.

Keeping it all in a single feed means your interest can be piqued at random times and you’ll be more likely to interact.

  • Am I missing any?

Just checking I’ve got them all?

What do you do when you’re really f’king angry?

I’ve not had a good day today. The kids have been shits, my wife has winged at me for not doing something I have already done, I’m hot, tired and stressed from work and fed up of not having a good nights sleep due to my 3 year old waking us up in the middle of the night constantly.

I want to rage at something but I can’t leave the house. I have access to a gaming PC, PS5 and all the movies the streaming services have to offer, my wife isn’t home so it’s just me and a couple of kids who should be asleep in the next hour or two.

I need some catharsis, what would you do?

Is there a way to quit just using a controller?

I’m enjoying Yuzu with my PC hooked up to my TV via HDMI, however there are times I want to back out and get back into Steam Big Picture.

Is there a way to quit yuzu with just some esoteric button combination?

At the moment I’m having to Remote Desktop in to hit the Esc button and going from there, which isn’t really ideal.

Are there any more episodes of 3C yet to come?

I just checked IMDB and it has Cricket as the last episode of the season. Does anyone know if there are more episodes on the horizon or are we all done for now?
