20 years ago, Pirate Bay's response to legal threats from DreamWorks
  • Not at that time. That came after the us government pushed the swedish government to do something and they in turn "strongly hinted" to the swedish judiciary system that they better do something.

And finally the sentencing judge socialised professionally with pro-copyright lobbyists.

  • Signal under fire for storing encryption keys in plaintext on desktop app
  • It's right there in the open. Install windows and you'll see it. There is personalised ads in the start menu and the os is uploading your private files to the cloud automatically, taking screenshots and uploading them, etc. It's not hidden whatsoever.

  • A cargo ship’s ‘WindWing’ sails saved it up to 12 tons of fuel per day
  • Not sure about this one example but working in the industry and following the development of wing sails the ones I've seen will fold one way or the other. This example in the article is probably a prototype or even experimental implementation to test the efficency.

  • Owners of a domain, which domain registrar did you choose and why?
  • Interestingly that is why I chose them like 5 years ago as I figured that is a plus as far as privacy is concerned. Having 1337 show up when performing a domain owner lookup instead of my name seem like a good thing and if I need it to be registered to me it's easy enough to transfer.

I love the service though and brokep being involved makes them worth considering for anyone into privacy.

  • Amsterdam testing system that can remotely slow e-bikes down
  • In my town people have died from being run into with 25 kmh rental e-scooters (eg. Voi) so they definitely have enough mass and speed to both seriously injure and kill people. I can only imagine the damage that is caused by these high speed fatbikes I see people riding on bikepaths now.

  • Amsterdam testing system that can remotely slow e-bikes down
  • So your system knows the exact situation and still is slowing down my bike, just at the moment I need to accelerate to avoid being overrun by that large truck heading into me.

This look like a problem with trucks, no? Maybe we should have a system to prevent trucks from running over people.

  • Audio Upscaler
  • Old mixtapes and such can be noisy with hizzes, pops and such. It is possible to filter out those artefacts but thats removing stuff, just as digitally compressing audio is removing stuff. You can't create data from nowhere for digitally compressed files and you can't simply add back the hizz, noise, and pops to the mixtapes if you remove that.

  • The loaded language of von der Leyen's migration letter
  • They are pointing out the difference between a criminal offense and an administrative offense. Crossing a border and entering a country without permission is typically not considered a crime and hence would not be called illegal. It would be consider an administrative offense, hence immigrants irregular status rather than illegal status.

The issue is confusing since the use of illegal immigrant is very common in english due to fud.

The destinction is however obvious when one notice that immigrants stand trials in administrative courts rather than criminal courts.

  • How many of you actually use the headphone jack on your phone?
  • Daily. Bought my sennheiser wired noise cancelling headphones in 2017 and they look quite rough now but still sound great and nc is still on par or better than most new headphobes. My brother and sister bought the bluetooth counterpart and both have replaced them years ago since they broke.
