Never Forget
  • According to a quick read on Wikipedia, you are right. He was charged, But not sentenced.

On January 6, 2011, Swartz was arrested by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) police on state breaking-and-entering charges, after connecting a computer to the MIT network in an unmarked and unlocked closet and setting it to download academic journal articles systematically from JSTOR using a guest user account issued to him by MIT.[15][16] Federal prosecutors, led by Carmen Ortiz, later charged him with two counts of wire fraud and eleven violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act,[17] carrying a cumulative maximum penalty of $1 million in fines, 35 years in prison, asset forfeiture, restitution, and supervised release.[18] Swartz declined a plea bargain under which he would have served six months in federal prison.[19] Two days after the prosecution rejected a counter-offer by Swartz, he was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment.[20][21]

In the context of my comment it was an ironic reference to the #NotAllMen hashtag wich, as I understood it, was often used by men downplaying the concerns of women and relativising common problems and fears they encounter by saying that not all men are that way. While technically true, it undermined the severity of the issues. As it was the case wih the original commenter here, who meanwhile deleted his comment or got it deleted. Their original comment reminded me of the hashtag.

After a few downvotes I added the irony flag, as I got the impression that my ironic use of the hashtag was not obvious to some readers here.

  • Son, we need to have a serious talk!
  • I did not wish them harm. I detailed how their behaviour could lead to a deadly end inflicted by the bear and noted that I am happy if there are less people with such mindsets. Whether they die or not is not important for the latter.

But I understand that my chosen words can make such a misleading impression as the important details are more fine-grained and left open for interpretation to the reader.

    Sorry for that.

    To clarify:
I don't really wish anyone harm. I am just sick of people who think there are justifications for raping people or doing some other unethical shit.
That's what formed the basis for my sarcastic comment.
This doesn't mean that anyone should get killed for thinking that way. But, I hope that such people will realize that this is not a reaction tolerable in a civilised and peaceful modern community, leading to a change in their mindset.

I don't know whether your "EDIT" note is about my comment or the other one from the othe person. In case it's about mine, I did not edit it, as should be visible depending on your Lemmy client.

BTW: I find it sad that you just criticise me for the impression I would wish someone harm, but not also the other one who wished for someone to get raped. Doesn't seem very consistent to me.

  • Stack Overflow bans users en masse for rebelling against OpenAI partnership — users banned for deleting answers to prevent them being used to train ChatGPT
  • That you deliver reasons for why you claim I'm wrong.

It's freemium, not free. As I said before, OpenAI limits the number of prompts you can make per hour in case you don't want to pay. Also, using the API or ChatGPT 4 costs money. Users of search engines are usually not asked for money.

  • Stack Overflow bans users en masse for rebelling against OpenAI partnership — users banned for deleting answers to prevent them being used to train ChatGPT
  • Well... as I said. OpenAI asks for money, search engines usually don't. Ergo, OpenAI is not free. (But freemium.)

Despite claiming that's not the case, you lack the necessary proof and don't seem to care about countering my argument with something of substance.

Such a discussion will not be fruitful if you are unwilling to deliver.

  • Germans fear migration more than climate change, study finds
  • The us is in many ways a much worse country than Germany (or almost any EU country). I don't see why we should strive to emulate that model.

Besides the point. Immigration does not necessarily lead to "bad" legislation.

  • Donald Trump says he'll revoke Joe Biden's protections for trans people 'on day one'
  • Thank you for the reference! Learnt something new. As far as I've read, the Overton window is not just that, but describes a general window of acceptable ideas or propositions. Of course, influenced by possible (public) majorities.

  • Add option which prompts the user whether they want to discard a comment which was not sent

I have typed a longer comment before and then accidentally pressed the "back" button on my smartphone before I posted it. The comment was sadly lost and the time I invested was wasted.

I haven't seen an option, which I could enable, such that Jerboa would show me a prompt whether I really want to go back, if I haven't posted the comment yet.

Did I miss it? If not, feel invited to see this as a feature request. (:

EA wants to place in-game ads in its full-price AAA games, again
  • Yes, and consider what insane amount of pressure was necessary to achive this. Over 200.000 negative reviews for HD2. That makes it very unlikely to happen again. It shows how little gamers can achieve and how little their concerns are heard if they are not accumulating to a critical mass.

  • Stack Overflow bans users en masse for rebelling against OpenAI partnership — users banned for deleting answers to prevent them being used to train ChatGPT
  • It's "freemium", not free. There is a difference. You can't use ChatGPT 4 without paying as well as the API. Also, you are limited in the number of prompts you can make per hour before you are put on pause and asked to pay.

Search engines like Ecosia, DuckDuckGo, etc. don't ask you for money. Regardless how intensively you use it. (They might come with other drawbacks though like Google with privacy, environment, ethical principles, ...)
