Bulletins and News Discussion from June 24th to June 30th, 2024 - Waiting for War - COTW: Lebanon
  • It's literally name recognition. Harris and Biden are genuinely unpopular and prominent. I recently rattled off half a dozen names of potential replacements, governors and senators, to a bunch of lib friends and the literally only recognized newsom and they are John Stuart watchers and watched the debate meaning they are not completely disengaged.

  • Can Colonialiam be stripped from the traditional "elves n orcs" high fantasy in any meaningful way?
  • The eu4 anbennar thing tries to address this by leaning in and exploring liberation of "monstrous" species as well as having a vast enough world where elves can be depicted as both primitive in some parts and classic eligheted trope elsewhere. There was also a crpg called arcanum that also had things like an underclass of orcs forming militant unions in a dnd but industrial revolution world. I remember this retrospective on it https://youtu.be/HMUugZ3DxH8?si=HeNGkI9Pi5vWVajg

  • This map from the new EU5 dev diary is making me feel things
  • Opinion especially among the more hardcore map Gamers has kinda turned on imperator. Played it with the big fan mod that mostly just ads flavor stuff to fill out the map and it was head and shoulders above ck2 vic3. The mechanics are really quite good.

  • Chinese students in US tell of ‘chilling’ interrogations and deportations
  • X Edward Guo, a professor of biomedical engineering at Columbia University, said that part of the problem is that, unlike in the US, military research does sometimes take place on university campuses. “It’s not black and white … there are medical universities that also do military. But 99% of those professors are doing biomedical research and have nothing to do with the military.”.

Us University's don't do military research

    Yes they do ??????????

    spoiler

cheese as largest exported food stuff, thinking European or central asia. Developed economy with advanced manufacturing, leaning more toward Europe. No fish exports, landlocked and with the cheese guessing an alpine country. 20b seemed like a lot for Luxembourg and too little for Austria so I guessed Switzerland first.

  • U.S. assessing if China’s SMIC broke U.S. rules to make Huawei chip
  • While mostly right, very funny it indulges mh17 hoax stuff. Why is it so hard to acknowledge arming poorly trained units with advanced anti air missiles can have blow back. Look at the plane that was mistakenly shot down in Iran couple years ago. Just weird hill to die on.

  • Listened to the podcast for the first ever time
  • Last 3 episodes were really bad. The regular show is good when they find a slate of insane ameribrained op eds to ridicule for 45 min also bc of the size of the show they have on very good guests fairly regularly. The episode recently with Ryan grim where they discussed his new book about the squad(absolutely brutal portrayal of AOC) was very good. Their interview with beirut based journalist Séamus Malekafzali was also stand out. All the spin offs that are actual passion projects are also good like others mentioned in this thread.

Bulletins and News Discussion from November 6th to November 12th, 2023 - Apartheid Antony's Asinine Adventure
  • The nyt investigation is really thorough in proving that the Russians did kill a number of civilians. When I say it's convincing like there are videos of some of the killings along with cell records and eyewitness testimony. I am always skeptical of eyewitness stuff but the rest holds up on its own imo. I seems it was probably revenge killings by a the russian unit that had one of their elements ambushed the week before. I personally haven't seen a lot of compelling evidence against their case.

I think the thing to push back on is there is no evidence that it was part of a systemic pattern of massacres. I think the genocide in Palestine really highlights the difference between brutal awful war and systemic crimes against humanity and genocide.

  • Anyone else feeling increasingly like 'what the hell is this' when you think about your life?
  • The community college in Dallas has a really cheap teaching bachelor's program now. Last year you get a job at school district so you get paid too. Teaching can be hell but the state keeps raising wages bc there are not enough teachers.

  • Democrats plan four-hour live stream with Twitch and YouTube stars

    >The creators include Clara Sorrenti, known online as Keffals; Steven Bonnell, known online as Destiny; and Ian Kochinski, known online as Vaush. The agenda says they will discuss issues such as climate change, affordable housing and student debt relief.
