‘Only Hamas can defend us’: Israeli raids and Fatah failures boost support in West Bank
  • The Israeli government / far right / zionists WANT the Palestinian people as oppressed and radicalized as possible — to guarantee a future pipeline of terrorism so they can use it to gain global sympathy, support, and justification for killing 10-1000x and accelerating both their genocide and land reclamation.

The goal hasn't changed in 80 years. The Nakba never ended, and will not end until the entire developed world codemns and sanctions Israel — especially in depriving them of all weaponry and military support.

  • AI 'godfather' says universal basic income will be needed
  • The process fueling Capitalism is workers making money to pay for goods and services. Once you automate a certain unknown % of the work force, the engine shuts down; Capitalism will have destroyed itself via automation. Germany during the hyperinflation of the 20's only reached 30-40% unemployment before fascist dictatorship. Fascism is currently rising around the world due to wealth inequality and Capitalism's exploitation of people and the environment.

The only solution that could possibly make any sense while maintaining Capitalism is UBI. Could you provide any solution that doesn't involve mass murder or starvation of the unemployable? I have yet to see any solution from anti-UBI commenters in almost 2 decades.

  • Single Issue Voters will save the world!
  • It's the Schrodingers democracy of the shrodingers "free" world we live in — Politics is pay to play, corporations are people and both can donate unlimited money, wealth equality is worse than the guilded age, but we totally have "democracy" bro. Also you should shut up and support a genocide because we're fighting to prevent the fascists from taking power, which will surely lead to genocide... Only worse!

This is the kind of discourse you get with a 2 party system ruled by a corporatocracy masquarading as a democracy — the propagandized neoliberal drones are most of the comments you read. Ultimately vote for Biden, because the alternative is literal Christian fascist dictatorship, but give Biden and neoliberals hell; make them believe they're gonna lose all the way to voting day.

  • Chinese police were allowed into Australia to speak with a woman. They breached protocol and escorted her back to China
  • It would be Whataboutism if I defended the accusations against China or Russia. I explicitly said we were better — just only better than the bottom of the barrel — and the whole point of my comment was to refute the right-wing nationalist fantasy that we were historically "strong", "great" or "righteous"; a time that never existed in reality.

I suggest you learn what maketh a logical fallacy.

  • ‘Magical thinking’: hopes for sustainable jet fuel not realistic, report finds | IPS report says replacement fuels well off track to replace kerosene within timeframe needed to avert climate disaster
  • Yes and no. All externalities that impact others are non-consensual, but you could extend that logic to the consumption of any finite resource and even moreso for inefficiency — the current markets inefficient consumption of that finite resource means there is less for everyone, and increases the price and opportunities for everyone, with people born later at an inherent disadvantage. You could extend that logic further to any alteration of the environment or natural world whatsoever; to all human consumption. Using any resource creates an external degradation in the availability and opportunities of everyone else regarding that resource.

The free market doesn't have a solution though — essentially zero capitalist orgs have chosen to voluntarily consume less or cease emissions. The ones that do are at a competitive disadvantage due to higher costs vs competitors — laws and regulations are required to level the playing field so the competition is fairer... A free market solution is an oxymoron. The free market created this crisis.

  • ‘Magical thinking’: hopes for sustainable jet fuel not realistic, report finds | IPS report says replacement fuels well off track to replace kerosene within timeframe needed to avert climate disaster
  • The climate crisis has little to do with what is physically or technologically possible. It's all about economics — what is feasible, and what is most profitable. In Capitalism cheap, dirty, and destructive will always win the race when the alternatives are less profitable.

The majority will not accept their 1k flight costing 5 or 10k. The human population simply will not accept a forceful phase-out of GHG's without alternatives that are equal or cheaper. We're greedy, and the greed is concentrated at the top.

  • How China is helping keep the Russian economy afloat
  • If Russia succeeds in Ukraine, China will have a roadmap on how to proceed with Taiwan. They're in a much better position, considering the west spent the last 3 decades making itself dependent on Chinese manufacturing and industry.

  • Chinese police were allowed into Australia to speak with a woman. They breached protocol and escorted her back to China
  • Yeah, it's not like western governments, "intelligence" agencies or police would ever beat protesters, persecute political dissidents, murder civilians, torture suspects in designated black sites, ally with dictatorships who torture and murder journalists with bone saws, overthrow democratically elected governments, or engage in any behavior that is horrifically anti-democratic or anti-human rights.

That time when the west was historically great was a lie. We were only better than fascism or communism, but our ruling class, the politicians they own, and their corporations have always engaged in horrific shit. Ours just hide behind the media and a liability shield of a dozen LLC's, or do it hidden behind closed doors — unless you're a palestinian, protester, communist, or a dozen other groups who are okay to oppress publicly at any given time.

  • Does any distro read through 100% of the source-code of a package before adding it to its repo?
  • Should ... Should we tell OP that nobody understands all of any moderately large codebase, especially the sub-dependencies ... or that even the thousands of developers who wrote most of that code don't understand how their own code works anymore?

I could read the same book every year and I still won't remember most of the minor events on my deathbed. Doesn't mean I won't remember the key components that make up the story — coding is like that, except the minor events and key components can be rewritten or removed by someone else whenever you go to read them next.

  • Ocasio-Cortez: State of US health care is ‘barbarism’
  • Can't elect competent accomplished geniuses because they're young, but can elect near-death dementia patients.

Not saying AOC's a genius, just that there are no qualifiers where a young person can lead the generation that will have to live with their consequences.

  • Ordered back to the office, top tech talent left instead, study finds
  • Yep. I'm willing to make 10% less to be fully remote. Given the alternative is fewer days of sleep each year, plus many more in time spent grooming and transiting, then the cost of transport and lunch, to ultimately get less done, both at home and at work (with the same deadlines) I might even take 15-20% less.

Work/life balance is more important than money.

  • Germany may introduce conscription for all 18-year-olds
  • The best argument for conscription is that, like politics or the police, the psychology predisposed to choosing it is not necessarily the most beneficial to be involved with it.

If you could choose to serve only in natural disaster relief, humanitarian, or aid operations it would make it significantly less conflicting.

Ultimately the requirement to be involved with, and potentially murder, in anti-democratic or anti-humanitarian operations, and acts of aggression, that could have been decided entirely by self-serving corporate or political interests makes conscription a dealbreaker.

  • How ‘Zionist’ became a slur on the US left
  • Stealing people's land from underneath them and giving it to another people (especially based on religion or ethnicity) is both a crime against humanity and a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (created 6 months after establishing the state of Israel), but the west just accepted Zionism because the majority of jews were white Europeans, the colonialists who dominated the league of nations didn't consider brown people to be people, and none of them wanted to allocate any of their own land due to their own antisemitism.

Zionism has always been a crime. We were just lied to and told things were "complicated" by the same colonialist oligarchs who call the Islamic extremism their own historic crimes created and amplified "complicated".

  • So, Memmy is broke abandonware now, huh?

Broke timestamps. Everywhere. New replies will show "10 hrs" while the original comment will show "18 mins".

When viewing posts I see tons of phantom comments that seemingly have nothing to do with the post or are replying to something when they appear at the top level. Navigating to the post in a web browser shows dozens more comments (not from users I've blocked or anything).

Formatting of content across posts and comments doesn't match what the site does when I view it in the browser.

Thanks to the Memmy dev and any contributors, but broken software is broken software.

So, what's the best alternative these days?
