Really bummed out when they cancelled 1313, I think it was part of the restructuring when Disney bought Lucasfilm.
I still watch the ten minute E3 video occasionally because I still think it looks great. Was always hoping it might get revived but I remember the news when someone noticed that Lucasfilm/Disney allowed the 1313 trademark to expire.
Another lost game. Don't get me started on Indiana Jones either. š

Kino Lorber releases a lot of films on DVD. Why are you still betting on physical media?
> The physical media business is still an important part of our business, even if itās in a transitional phase right now. When we entered, it was a $7 billion to $10 billion business; now itās struggling to be a $1 billion business, but itās still a $1 billion business. And we see opportunity there, particularly in a world where thereās a rapid deterioration of the availability of titles online. When Netflix had a rental-by-mail business, I did some of their first deals, back in the early [2000s]. Back then, there were about 100,000 titles available from Netflix for rental by mail. As of the latest report, there are probably 3,000 titles film titles available to stream on Netflix and probably, in total, no more than 7,000 or 8,000 to stream across all of the services.
> For collectors who love cinema, and Iām not just talking about the extreme cinephiles, Iām talking about film lovers who recognize the fact that physical media is a way for them to have the films that they love in the best possible versions ā we release in 4K UHD ā and have them forever. Those little plastic discs will probably outlive all of us. So weāve cultivated those customers and they sustain our business, even as we recognize the deterioration of that business on a macro level. Itās a curated approach, a targeted approach, but there are many, many really good titles out there, even with the strictest curation standards. Films that really deserve to be made available again.
Iāve heard you say that DVD is the new vinyl, that physical media is set for a revival. Where do you see evidence of that?
> Youāre using DVD generically, of course, but what weāre really talking about is the newest standard, which is 4K UHD. You wonāt see anything in as good a quality as you can see on a 4K UHD copy now. And it allows for including a range of material beyond what you could put on a DVD or even a Blu-ray. It is going to become the collectible of record. People who really care about preserving their own cultural collections are going to be embracing 4K. We heard that at the Oscars. I had a great chat with Christopher Nolan, who has been a big champion of physical media. He loves our stuff and maybe weāll do some things with him from his library, but heās embraced the physical media business. [Quentin] Tarantino was certainly one of them who raves about the importance of preserving cinema culture in physical media. Whether the comparison with vinyl is exactly on target or not, itās close enough.
I used this for years, from version 1.9 all the way to 5.x when I moved onto other software.

Yeah, there are quite a few shots that stand out for looking a bit iffy.

I think the Cannes crowd are a strange bunch anyway. They gave Dial of Destiny a 5-minute standing ovation, so make of that what you will. (PS I though DoD was great but a standing ovation!?)
Way back when, Pixar were going to make a film called Newt. It was about two rare species of Newt, one of each gender, who needed to mate to save their species. Unfortunately, the female couldn't stand the male. For whatever reason, they escape the lab and have an adventure.
Apparently this was around the time Rio was released and the stories were apparently too similar. (I haven't seen Rio, do I don't know), so the project was canned.
It's a shame as I really liked the concept art which can be found online and I really liked the style.
In fact, newt makes two small tiny cameos in other Pixar films.

Isn't Reform a company rather than an actual political party? Tice is a chairman but not a democratically voted in one.
The problem with those videos is that they're designed for the YouTube advert system. Show the big moments to get them interested and then they sit and watch the ad/trailer rather than skip it.
It looks odd when you're viewing it separately though.
I did wonder about the trailer, was it the whole plot or just the start of the film. It's a bit of a gamble.
You've reminded me of The Force Awakens teaser trailer. Only a few shots of the main characters with no idea of the story at all.
This also carries on to the next 2Ā½ minute trailer with no clues to the story really. I thought they were well done.
Wow, that was cool.
Instead, we get this over and over again.
I'm sure when I was a lad there were only two types of trailer, or at least the ones I remember. First there was a teaser trailer that would only last for about a minute and was quite coy in what to reveal. Although in fairness, that's probably because there wasn't enough footage ready to make a trailer, especially if it contained special effects elements.
The second trailer would later arrive, two minutes at most, containing special effects shots, and it would give you an idea of the film without revealing too much.
What have we got now? The entire film in three minutes to make sure everyone comes to see the film. I don't, I feel like I've seen it and have no plans on watching it now. cough The Fall Guy cough
Recent trailers have revealed plot points that would normally be considered spoilers. Should studios stop doing this?

In the beginning, it was a mix of LiftOff! and Jerboa. The dev of LiftOff! had twins and understandably, he hasn't returned and the app has fallen to the wayside.
So I tried Thunder (available on Android and iOS) and it's been really good, lots of regular updates and features as well.

Did you know, it was Roger Corman who told a young writer that if he could write a Mad Max rip off, he would let him direct it. The writer, Peter Radar, wanted to be a director and came back with a script he wrote called Waterworld. Corman liked the script but said, āAre you out of your mind? This would cost us three million dollars to make this movie!ā
I remember SotE very well. The whole thing was a major media event by Lucasfilm. There was:
- PC and N64 game
- Tie-in novel
- Comic book series
- Soundtrack CD
- A 'making of' book
Essentially, everything that would've been released to promote a major film but this time, there was no film. I remember the making of book well as there was a picture of the game developers playing the N64 version but their hands were in cardboard boxes. The N64 hadn't been released yet and so they had to hide the controllers from prying eyes.
With the news of Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis working on a Gollum spin-off, Warner Bros. has taken to removing a similar-sounding fan film from the internet.
I haven't seen this theatrical re-release but I saw it when it opened back in '99. There was no way it could live up to the hype of a brand new Star Wars film after about 16 years.
I bought the DVD and watched it a couple more times and then forgot about it. I bought the Blu-rays in late 2020, and watched the prequel trilogy again for the first time in over a decade.
I think Phantom Menace held up the best, possibly because the healthy amount of practical work. The CGI of the sequels hasn't held up so well.

The movie becomes the biggest box office hit of 1976, notching ten Oscar nominations and winning Best Picture. The true story of the making of the iconic movie Rocky.
The review was very interesting because it sounds like they fucked up by saving money. The whole film has been compressed onto a 66gb disc. In comparison, if you have access to that kaleidoscope service where you can stream the original 4K files, it is a 87gb download. So paramount have compressed the film buy about a third, causing the film to look worse than it should.

George Miller's action-packed 'Mad Max 5' is drawing very strong early praise, with some qualifications.
I was just saying to someone that I think Riddick is one of those characters who are better the less you know about them, like the original film.
Of course all the sequels try to answer those questions.
On the other hand, the Xbox game, Escape From Butcher Bay, was one the better film tie-ins I've played.
After years of development, 'Riddick: Furya' will begin filming in August in Europe.

The problem is the country is in such a fucking mess, it will take Labour years to try and sort it out. The fact Starmer won't even think about joining the single market is stupid too. Probably appeasing the Brexit Labour voters.
Yeah, great film with an awesome soundtrack. I've owned it on VHS and DVD, but I never got around to the Blu-ray. To fix that, it'll probably be the next 4k i pick up.
Having a huge love for the original trilogy, could a new film possibly have any chance with the hype that came before it.
Short answer, no.
I rewatched the prequel trilogy a few years ago, hadn't watched them for over a decade. In my opinion, Phantom Menace actually comes out best of the three. Possibly because there's a lot of practical work and the following films were pushing a lot of early digital and it hasn't held up well.
A middle-aged nerd from the UK. I like films and write about them, sometimes for Film Stories or my blog.
Have a great day.
