It's actually a plastic ribbon with a metallic foil in a zigzag pattern on top of it. It's extremely cheap and does a pretty good job. It usually sits on top of a metal bar that can deflect a tiny little bit.
You can read all about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strain_gauge
The main effect is that the resistance depends on the geometry. So as that changes, the resistance changes as well.

That's because of the way these scales work. They use a material that deforms under stress and when it deforms the resistance changes. By putting current through this material and measuring the voltage drop, it can be mapped to how much stress the material is under and thus how much weight is on the scale.
This is a pretty roundabout way and has a lot of caveats, but it is very cheap. So cheap scales always work this way. That's why they aren't super accurate and have deviations depending on things like temperature. Another big downside is any permanent deformation ruins the calibration, giving incorrect results. That's why you never put more weight on kitchen scales than it says, it will break them.
The issue you are running into is the way it measures. It applies a very specific voltage and current in order to get the result. The lookup table it uses is only valid within a narrow range. When the battery voltage goes outside that range, it can no longer perform the measurement. Even though there's plenty of juice for things like the little processing chip and the LCD display. They don't need a lot of power and can do with low voltages. But it can no longer weigh anything so it just errors out with a low battery warning.
I liked late seasons Neelix. I hated his last episode though. Like really? This is the best you can come up with? Somehow there is another set of Talaxians all the way out here. And Neelix just so happens to run into them? And be similar enough in culture to live among them? Can we just get a calculation on the odds of that happening? And Neelix is somehow fine with being left behind? Left behind from the only family he has had for years? People he spent all this time helping out getting home, only to bail just before the finish? Because of the power of boners? Bullshit.
In my head canon that episode simply does not exist.
So the logic is, because we fucked up the first time, we must be good at fucking up. So if we try to fuck it up a second time, it will totally work and get unfucked?
We have been actively fucking up for about 150 years, so I'd say we have experience. And we're currently fucking up at record rates, so if we aren't qualified I don't know who is.
Oh fuck they repaired the car. I know, I'll just crash on the formation lap and run back to my warm spot. I will blame it on the brakes, those things suck so everyone will believe me. Crashes the car, fuck the thing is somehow still perfectly fine, just my luck. Hey would you look at that, this big patch of rocks is perfect to get stuck in. Oh noes I got stuck, well that's it for me I guess.
Look at my awesome Linux setup you guys! Shows a beautiful wallpaper with almost nothing else. You guys know you can install wallpapers on almost every OS since at least the 90s right?
We have this awesome thing in a lot of places where you can use a scanner and scan as you shop. You can put the bag in the cart and bag while you shop. When you get to the self checkout, you can use the scanner and instantly pay for everything and be out within seconds. I pay with my phone so just a touch is needed and I'm out of there. If you are the carry bags kind you can even take the bag out of the cart, return the cart to the correct place and walk to the car with the bag. It's so fast and efficient.
I've become so spoiled I actively avoid places that don't have such a thing. And I hate people who have a full cart at the self checkout and scan everything much much slower than the regular checkout with a person who's job it is to do that. It's fine if you have like 5 items and just scan them quickly at the self checkout. Anything beyond that really should be scanned during the shopping or just go to the regular checkout which is designed to handle a lot of stuff.
Sure in general, if a driver can get back on track, it's better to have a yellow. Not to interrupt the session and get going.
I think after Bianchi (RIP) they changed the rules that if there are people on track or they are needed on track, it needs to be red or SC before it's allowed. And with the mandatory SC deltas for all cars. Later the VSC is introduced and got incorporated where under certain conditions a VSC is enough for a marshal to be on track. Like for example to get a bit of debris off the track with a brave person running out and grabbing it. With the damage to the barrier, people were required to be on track, so it should have been red as soon as possible to get that going.
And it's a hard job, I fully get that and it's hard to make the right call all the time.
But in this case, with the state of the car and the state of the barrier, I don't see it as something that should depend on what the driver inside the car is doing. And we've even seen teams and drivers getting punished for trying to drive back cars in an unsafe condition.
And bring him to a free clinic to see after his bunghole.
Bullshit reason in my opinion. Of course Stroll would attempt to do anything to get back to the pits, that's his job. And like he said, from inside the car it's hard to see how broken it exactly is. But for anyone outside of the car is was obvious that car was destroyed and wasn't going to come back on it's own in any safe or timely manner. It should have been red flagged right away. Even if Stroll got it going and carried on to the pits, there would still be need for debris clearing and barrier repair. And with the state of that car, he would have put oil and debris all across the track in doing so, requiring even more clean up.
It should have been red right away. There have been so many issues this year where race control is slow to put out a flag or VSC. And weird choices when to use the SC and when to use the VSC. They need to do better in the future.
Oeoeoe this has VGA internet? Cool! I've been stuck on CGA for so long, considered getting an EGA upgrade, but man that shit is expensive. I already put all my money in getting a color monitor, but it sucks without a good graphics card to back it up. I have a full sized slot in my chassis, so having a long card isn't an issue for me thankfully. But my motherboard doesn't have any VLB, but that's fine I hope.
People will probably just post a Powershell script on Github to make it update directly from the official servers without paying the extra fee. It's funny how the most popular activation scripts are on Github, even though Microsoft owns Github and could easily just delete them.
Most people who are fed up with Microsofts crap simply don't buy a new computer anymore. They just do everything on an iPad (maybe pro) or similar without Windows. Gamers switch over to consoles, with Nintendo and Steam deck being preferred. Those things may run Linux like the Steam deck or another non Windows OS, but the user won't notice or care since they don't interact with it.
The time of the desktop and to a lesser extent the laptop has come and gone. It's only for enthusiasts and people at work. At work people probably just use the same couple of apps or even just a browser with a webapp and never really interact with the OS. If it's even a full computer and not a thin client connecting to a virtual desktop environment. People don't know or care about OSes. Maybe they'll bitch about Windows at times, but they bitch about a lot of things at work and they have no influence over any of it.
And Schnitzel, I love a good Schnitzel!
Plus Sauerkraut is the most versatile and delicious thing ever.
That would depend heavily on how accessible the computer is and how fat your fingers are. And I can tell you, mine are pretty fat.
And then you add the inflation and you actually just owe money. Got to get that third job at 65

Rescued old CRT I put a lot of work in. Was totally dead when I got it, rescued it to be almost perfect again.
It still has an intermittent horizontal size issue and the power button has some cosmetic wear. But at least the power button works, it used to only work when you would hold it down.
Be sure to enable the audio for some good retro tunes coming from the monitor.
Serious question. I know there are a lot of memes about microservices, both advocating and against it. And jokes from devs who go and turn monoliths into microservices and then back again. For my line of work it isn't all that relevant, but a discussion I heard today made me wonder.
There were two camps in this discussion. One side said microservices are the future, all big companies are moving towards it, the entire industry is moving towards it. In their view, if it wasn't Mach architecture, it wasn't valid software. In their world both software they made themselves and software bought or licensed (SaaS) externally should be all microservices, api first, cloud-native and headless. The other camp said it was foolish to think this is actually what's happening in the industry and depending on where you look microservices are actually abandoned instead of moving towards. By demanding all software to be like this you are limiting what there is on offer. Furthermore the total cost of operation would be higher and connecting everything together in a coherent way is a nightmare. Instead of gaining flexibility, one can actually lose flexibility because changing interfaces could be very hard or even impossible with software not fully under your own control. They argued a lot of the benefits are only slight or even nonexistent and not required in the current age of day.
They asked what I thought and I had to confess I didn't really have an answer for them. I don't know what the industry is doing and I think whether or not to use microservices is highly dependent on the situation. I don't know if there is a universal answer.
Do you guys have any good thoughts on this? Are microservices the future, or just a fad which needs to be forgotten ASAP.
