I looked up 'SNL Ukraine' on youtube and it was some of the most insidious, soul crushing regime propaganda I've ever seen. Even the most lurid liberal fantasies about repression in the Soviet Union could never envision a machine so uniquely adept at annihilating artistic dignity in its cradle as American network television.

There was a medieval european profession known as a "Kunstfurzer", it was a jester who would fart for the entertainment of royalty. One english Kunstfurzer, 'Roland the Farter' was rewarded handsomely with land and a manor.

People like Noah Pinion have played a similar role for the royalty of the neoliberal age. Unlike medieval jesters, they mistakenly reason that their thinking is profound and valuable because they've made a career out of it, Roland was almost certainly not under this delusion.

In the past republican politicians could promise unworkable, highly ideological and impossible ends like border walls and abortion bans while doing none of them and just enacting the will of the chamber of commerce. Now true believers are in charge demanding the impossible conservative policies advocated by talk radio cranks.

Conservatism has never been a functional ideology, historically the cultural grievances of its voting base were managed of the political will of cynical but competent political operators. Trump inverted this order and now religious devotion to him specifically can make or break candidates.
