  • Never heard of it, but I'll be sure to keep away in the future, thx.

  • If you're not doing anything crazy, there's no reason linux should be any harder to use than Windows.

Once you're up and running, daily life will be pretty straightforward.

Plenty of great advice in the other posts that I won't rehash. One thing I didn't see mentioned is using a live boot to try out linux. You can basically run it off a USB stick before you install it to get a feel for what it's like. Most "beginner friendly" distros will have tutorials on how to create the live disk. Example for Pop!_OS: https://support.system76.com/articles/live-disk/

  • The MOBA genre is based off a mod for Warcraft 3 called Defense of the Ancients. DotA, being a mod, had lots of "quirks" (aka bugs) in the game play that kind of just became part of the flavor of the game. LoL was the first standalone MOBA, based off DotA and (iirc) developed by some of the people who worked on the original mod. LoL was designed as a standalone game but it recreated all the quirks of the mod because they were believed to be so important to the game.

Blizzard, when they made HotS, looked at some of the wonky, quirky things and said "This is dumb, let's strip that out and make it simpler." The result is a MOBA that's just as fun but less complex. I really enjoyed it a lot for that reason.

  • Oh yeah, I forgot they added an official ARAM mode. Back when I played, it was a custom game thing and kinda honor system to stay in the middle lane. I played it a lot before I quit for the low stress environment. Kinda want to check it out now. Shame/not-shame I can't because I'm on linux.

  • People were begging for auto-mute back when I was playing. I realize that it's a team game and they don't want to discourage communication but they were well aware of the toxicity. They implemented the Tribunal system to try to address it. Didn't do much in the short term. Glad rito caved on the auto-mute.

  • Possible you're in a noobie bracket where they keep you away from experienced players so you can learn with less stress... and get into the game before you realize how toxic it can be. :-D

But glad it's good so far! It really is a fun game. I played for a couple years despite all the toxicity so yeah.

  • Is that game still the poster child for toxic gamers? Been years since I played but I would never let my kid play that game.

It's sad because it is pretty fun when you get into it and when you have people to play with. But it really only takes one person to ruin a match for nine other people by trolling/feeding/etc. I ended up quitting because it was just WAY too toxic.

The shit people used to say in that game... like nothing I've heard in any other game. Literally talking about ::: spoiler spoiler raping people ::: like that's somehow acceptable shit talking. Curious if it's gotten any better... it certainly couldn't have gotten any worse.

  • For the sake of those who love the game, I hope it's true. Personally, I doubt it, but who knows...

  • Ditto. I swapped to linux this summer and landed on Pop!_OS because my laptop has hybrid Nvidia graphics. Pop supports that really well because the company that makes Pop sells laptops with similar hybrid Nvidia graphics.

So far almost every game I've tried on Pop has worked with no issue. Of the games that have had issues, EVERY ONE got working with the help of Proton db. (Note: All Steam games or games with native linux support.)

Anyways, yeah I'm really not the biggest fan of Pop's desktop environment, but it work really well for gaming so I'm leaving well enough alone.

  • Does the world really need another building/survival "game"? These are getting as stale as Ubisoft open world games.

  • Couldn't agree more. I don't even need to watch the trailer, this is an instant buy for me when it comes out.

  • Admittedly I haven't been following US politics much since Biden took office and things calmed down a bit... so I was more than a little surprised to read that they're trying to impeach him. I couldn't possibly imagine what for since he's the most milquetoast president we've had in ages. Turns out it's not even him, it's "his family's shady business dealings" whatever the fuck that means.

Honestly, it's like the GOP has no concept of morality or laws and just heard someone say that Trump did that and it was bad so we should accuse Biden of it!

  • Not sure if iOS lets you use the "Private DNS" feature, but using an adblocking DNS is the way to go on Android.

    https://adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.html

(Looking at that page, it does have iOS instructions available, so I'm guessing yes.)

  • I have Edge installed via Flatpak and the cloud gaming worked perfectly. Shockingly well, really. Unfortunately, it requires a controller and doesn't support KBM, which is kinda counterproductive for me since I can just use my Xbox to play with controller.

Oh well, it's a step in the right direction. Maybe they'll get KBM support going in the future. I'll keep an eye on it. Thx again!

  • Technically, I am still setup to dual boot to Windows. But now that I've been off it for months, I really don't want to go back even for "free" games. It feels like a triumph to be off it and every day I don't go back into it when I can easily dual boot feels like a big middle finger to MS. I've been finding different ways to do that since the 80's when I used DR-DOS instead of MS-DOS. :-D

  • I'm on Pop_OS. I like Nobara better but on my laptop with hybrid graphics, Pop works better for gaming.

I didn't follow any guides. I looked up individual games that had issues. Mostly I game on my Xbox unless it's a game that plays better with KBM (think Civ and the like) or indy games that aren't on console yet. Neither of those tend to have any major issues with Proton.

  • I didn't realize there was a cloud gaming option. I'll look into that option. Thanks!

  • I didn't realize there was a cloud gaming option. I have Edge installed for work stuff (Teams and Outlook web) so I'll look into that option. Thanks!

EDIT - Looked into it, works surprisingly well! EXCEPT it requires a controller. Kinda the whole reason I want to play on my computer is to use KBM, otherwise I'll just use the ol Xbox. Oh well, maybe they'll improve it in the future. It's still a beta in theory.
