  • "The best" by what metric?

They aren't better in any metric when compared to developed countries: not happiness, not prosperity, not education, not healthcare, not rights and freedoms, not democracy, not science, not crime rate... 🥱

  • Really, I wish you luck!

I've tried to get my MP, local city council, regional council, and regional advocacy groups to get some movement, and nothing.

I'm saying this as I'm watching a bike touring video series around the Netherlands, and I feel even more pissed off about the state of our transportation priorities.

  • Also, the US bombed the fuck out of every country that tried to resist being taken over by western corporations.

My point, exactly. Industry is the hand that feeds the mouth of the government, so they help each other to destroy society.

  • We can't do "business" with an unstable idiot.

It's best we ignore him, and keep working with countries who aren't lead by a total shit stain.

As an individual, I'm happy continuing to rapidly cull any American ties I have with brands and services.

  • Yes, I wouldn't say they are solely to blame, but their influence drives politics, and politics drives infrastructure and societal change.

There is no "big bike" or "big pedestrian" lobby, so we have to pull hair and teeth to get just a measly strip of paint on the ground, or for a sidewalk to be built.

But the car industry, and their friends in politics, have made so if millions need to be spent for "one more lane, bro", they're totally fine doing it.

Hell, our own corrupt Ontario Premier (Doug Ford) wants to spend $400 million on a parking garage. $400 million could build an entire network of active transportation connections throughout the entire province, and most places have to beg to get the government to give even a $1 million for projects that save lives.

It's almost unheard of for politicians so say that car-centric projects are a bad idea. Yet, some run on an election platform to GET RID OF bike lanes. And that goes beyond just pandering to the public with wedge issues, there has to be industry influence at play, too.

  • Interesting, so does your municipality consider them to be standard vehicles, like an automobile?

Or something more like an e-bike?

Around here, they are quite literally classified as pedestrians. Which is why they're forced to be on sidewalks 🤷‍♂️

  • If it's about ownership of the shop, that shouldn't really be an issue either, since they can contact the property manager of that space, especially if they're in some kind of plaza, and then racks will be installed at their request.

I've had to do this as a customer, and it works better when businesses contact their property manager to make that request.

And yes, I can understand that just bringing your bike in might be the easiest for some people, but it doesn't really seem to be a viable excuse.

For example, if I'm running errands and I need to make a stop at a bike shop, I might have a cargo trailer with me, or I might be hauling kids around in a kid trailer. It just seems silly that I'd have to bring all that shit into the store. to give them money.

  • The bike shops around me don't own their shop. It's usually some rented space in a car oriented strip mall.

Perfect, all they need to do is contact the property manager for the plaza and bike racks will be installed.

I've had to do this myself as a customer and it works.

And as a business, I would imagine these property managers would haul ass at the request.

  • For me, the trick with the metal trays is to just very gently heat them to release any of the ice from sticking to the sides. Once that's done, they come out very cleanly. Zero fracturing or fragmenting. It's beautiful.

  • This might work fine if you just have a pretty standard regular bike.

However, imagine you're visiting a bike shop while on some kind of cycling tour and you have an 80 pound fully loaded rig with you.

It just seems silly that you have to haul all that shit inside of a store just to give them business. It's kind of disrespectful to the patrons.

I've had plenty of situations where I might be running errands with a trailer hooked up, and that would even make it difficult to bring into a store. There's just so many reasons why it's a bad idea, and almost none for why they shouldn't have a bike rack outside.

  • Good luck. Getting the HTA to change for the benefit of non-car drivers is near impossible.

We need the Idaho Stop legalized in Canada and the HTA is the only way to get it (and that hasn't happened in... Decades?). 😞

  • I really don’t think that’s feasible, though. Most cities genuinely struggle with trying to make space just for bicycle lanes, there’s no way most of them can fit another lane for yet another class of vehicles. Taking away all regular car lanes might do it, but I don’t think that’s remotely realistic :D

I like to think of it like this: cars are not the future. The sooner we build for non-car modes of transportation, the better. And any city that fails in this regard will not attract the best people, because it will be an undesireable city to live in.

Hey, you don't need to take "lanes" from cars, so we can start with on-street parking! Any new developments should have design for these other forms of transportation in their plan, just like many do with multi-use paths (instead of sidewalks + bike gutters).
