[long] Some tests of how much AI "understands" what it says (spoiler: very little)

I enjoyed reading that (for certain definitions of 'enjoy'.)
I write cryptic crosswords (and occasionally get paid for them!) Thus far, my experiments with these engines have been a spectacular failure (both for solving and setting), mainly because cryptic clues are specifically designed to play with language rules and how they can be used to represent multiple things in constrained spaces and are utterly dependent upon 'understanding'.

Cruciverbalist, with a side-order of boardgame design.
