I hate that things are the way that they are now, I can't even have a good laugh at Tucker getting attacked by demons in his sleep like I would have a decade ago

I tell people in my parents' generation that retail put me as close to suicide as I've ever been in my life and they usually give me that face that means they think I'm lying or exaggerating. I wasn't even working it for that long, only like 7 months!

My experiences were light in comparison to yours, and most long-term retail workers', I'd wager, but I distinctly remember this moment where I was watching the clock as usual and I reached this horrific moment of clarity where I could almost FEEL the seconds of my limited lifespan disappearing with each second that ticked away. I have never forgotten the chill of that moment, one that was in retrospect me listing very close to oblivion, because the staleness of my world in that moment seemed worse to me than being dead.

Then I blink and realize I'm literally just being extremely uncool and humorless and literally doing exactly what the memer is saying "we" do by reacting that way to the slightest bit of teasing.

I think too often "magic" ends up existing in that sort of story as just alternate technology. It can make the dichotomy between them seem like little more than an aesthetic difference, and it's especially obvious when the magic is highly systematized. A wizard who threatens to shoot fire from his hands, who is loaded up on his mana resource and has great aim with his hand-blasts, seems to me like little more than a person with a fancy gun.

There are some examples of "system" magic that still feels distinct though, like in Earthsea or Discworld, where magic is a tool that interacts with the world like technology, but cannot be manipulated without something special that is difficult to exploit. Discworld's magic is basically 40k orks, magic that stems from collective belief, which is hard to manufacture inorganically. Earthsea's magic comes from understanding things deeply, being able to capture the essence of things in a word and then being able to manipulate it. The "magic" ends up being the same hard-to-define relationship between the world and the words we use to break it into pieces. In a way, it's like technology's shadow, the same drive to control and understand but in the opposite direction.

I agree with you that the little tales in the leaks do actually fit the style of real mythology, which is full of stories about freaky sex from incest to bestiality to tree-sired pregnancies and self-cest.

Imo this is just an example of why these attempts at story-driven immortal franchises will inevitably collapse under their own weight. Pokemon initially worked fine as a sort of amusement park reality where there isn't really any focus on the wider world or its history, but as these weird amalgamated corporate franchises get bigger than their original scope, they run out of material to grow up with, and they start to just grow in every other direction instead. It's why your favorite Netflix series starts to fill its runtime with episodes devoted to giving every side character, no matter how irrelevant, a full developmental arc--the "universification" of settings
