  • even if humans could organize and design fully self-sustaining habitats that did not require a biosphere or extensive body modifications (unlikely), there would be little reason for us to ever bother with the energy expenditure of transitioning into or out of a gravity well ever again.

  • i know space marines don't use cover so its a moot point but i still wish you could switch which side of the character the camera is on while aiming ranged weapons. idk maybe you can but i haven't seen it in any gameplay footage so far.

  • i might be dumb (philosopher) but i see it as the difference between claiming that consciousness is entirely nonexistent (techbro death cultist 'meat computer' shit) vs. claiming that consciousness is in a dialectical relationship with physical reality (whereas Idealism claims that physical reality is entirely nonexistent and 'vulgar materialism' claims that consciousness is entirely nonexistent)

  • Taoism has criticisms of 'great man theory' type thinking but also kinda falls into a kind of 'peasant tailism' laissez-faire-but-for-illiterate-peasant-farmers attitude. directly addresses how many problems are socially constructed, such as the 'lock creates the thief' idea where the guy locking up a hoard of treasure is the one creating the conditions for the crime to arise rather than the criminal being individually responsible for summoning evil into the world or something. probably more compatible with anarchism than democratic centralist conceptions of communism but i've only read like one book about it, theres kind of a current of 'don't rock the boat or interfere in things unnecessarily with proactive rulership' attitude.

  • if aliens can physically transport their living bodies between stars they can almost certainly make themselves imperceptible to us. bending light waves or jamming our monkey neurons from noticing them seems easy compared to FTL space travel, heck for all we know there is one or more species of insect or animal native to earth that exploits human psychology to be imperceptible

  • Lost Planet was amazing, lost planet 2 as well. 3 had cool first person robot gameplay but the on foot gameplay was just worse gears of war, it lost that arcade-y jump and dodgeroll gameplay with plenty of invulnerability frames that made the first 2 special.

  • Good Bye, Lenin!

a movie i was forced to watch in my german language class. a teenage boy protagonist's mom (a member of the east german communist party) has a heart attack (from seeing her son being beaten by the eeeeebil east german police during an anti-government demonstration) right before the berlin wall falls, she wakes up in a coma with the doctors saying not to shock her, and the boy protagonist has to pretend like east germany never fell by wearing old clothes, replacing labels on groceries and creating fake news broadcasts for his mom. his dad had 'abandoned his family for a western woman' but it ackshually turns out he was fleeing the east because he refused to join the communist party and planned to bring his family with him.

one of the dumbest movies i've ever watched (not in a good way) and emblematic of the constant un-subtle anti-communist propaganda american students are exposed to, especially when they seek understanding of other cultures. idiot high school me wanted to learn to read Marx, all i learned was how to order food and buy clothes and hate east germany.

  • the fact that this room did not spontaneously combust into smokeless fire rendering all within into columns of salt and ash is perhaps the best evidence i currently have for the nonexistence of any morally valid and effective deity.

  • 'hey what if we gave an ARPG the control scheme of an RTS, that would be great and not a horrible idea' - all MOBA games

  • comrade, your hate is not pure. do not envy the finance ghoul, pity their vacuous and transactional inner lives. it's not your personal failure that you weren't born as privileged, there is no shame or failure on your part, the shame and failure belongs to the economic/social systems. much more shameful to have the comfort of choice, and still choose to exploit and commodify for personal gain. your continued survival is revenge against a broken world.

  • i went to college and no one will hire me now (i'm either 'over qualified' for unrelated entry level jobs or 'under qualified' for anything related to my fields of study)

workers: please mr. porky, please let me work just one more hour this week at the slop depot! I need to pay rent!

porky: NO ONE WANTS TO WORK ANYMORE! THIS WHOLE COUNTRY IS LAZY!

workers: please mr. porky, give me a job, i'm begging you, look, look, i went into crippling debt to get a college degree!

porky: DEGREE?! COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE LAZY WOKE GOOD FOR NOTHING COMMIES WHO DON'T WANT TO WORK A DAY IN THEIR LIVES! (not pictured: porky's nephew with a degree in '''communications''', given a high-level job they are unqualified for)

workers: but mr. porky i thought you were a 'jobs creator'?

porky: THAT'S RIGHT YOU PEONS WOULD HAVE NOTHING WITHOUT ME! BY THE WAY I'M FIRING 99% OF THE WORKFORCE AND REPLACING THEM WITH AI THAT DOESN'T WORK, AND THE 1% REMAINING WILL DO ALL THE EXTRA WORK FOR NO ADDITIONAL PAY! NOW TELL ME I'M AN AMAZING GENIUS INNOVATOR OR ELSE I'M CUTTING YOUR HOURS TO ONE DAY A WEEK!

  • resting kubrick stare face, the ghouls don't make human suits like they used to

  • i kinda like the EW idea, i've only ever heard the 'fits on the tabletop' ranges excuse before, but its still a bit silly that the kind of missiles we currently use on trucks to attack things a state away suddenly shoot less far than the average infantry assault rifle, like if EW and active/passive defense was good enough that an Iskander or HIMARS could only shoot 900m effectively, we would stop using them in favor of some other weapon designed for those ranges in the first place, or use something that requires less EW capabilities like a direct fire cannon or dumb rocket. if there's passive defense that shoots down projectiles it would be cool to see that happen more often, but the AMS is fairly rare equipment in mechwarrior 5. i think some of the battletech lore clashes with the high tech clean angular aesthetic of the technology in battletech, like the mechs are ancient and passed down through generations in some cases with the original plans and factories lost forever, they should have like family markings and clan banners and custom retrofit parts and the like, but they kinda just look like futuristic (if kinda 80's retro) mass produced clean lines angular robots with the only customization coming in the form of paint jobs and which weapons you attach. the mech designs would make more sense to me in a more centralized, unified setting rather than the semi-feudal oligopoly in battletech.

  • to answer that question i would need to see the ratios of mecha games to total game releases over time. my ideal Large Map Long Range First Person Mecha Game has yet to be created. Titanfall 1 and 2 nailed the aesthetic but the gameplay was basically COD with double jumps, and larger-scale COD with no climbing when inside the mechs. i want something more like ARMA, with mechs that can go prone and lean (and maybe even dig trenches like infantry can in Enlisted) and with effective weapons ranges that are longer than the visible horizon. a 1990s tank should not be able to shoot farther than a huge mecha gun (i'm looking at you, mechwarrior series with your 900m max range '''long-range missiles''') also gimme some gosh darn mecha parkour, its wild that titanfall 1 and 2 focused so much on mobility for the pilot only for the titans to have their agility neutered to fit in the maps. in titanfall 2 there is a cutscene where your mech is climbing a mountain, i want to do that kind of thing in gameplay so badly. being able to navigate non-flat terrain is like, the entire and only advantage a mech might possibly have over other military vehicles. until that specific game is made gaming will be more or less irrelevant to me, an idle distraction full of annoying ads that i waste my time with until something better comes along.

  • he explicitly says all the time that he is overly nice to people on camera even when he disagrees with them so that he can hopefully deprogram their followers. its like you don't understand the concept of media or propaganda, or are being intentionally obtuse.
