Can you drive a manual transmission?
  • Mid 30s, US. First car was a manual, but I have an automatic now. I do miss it, but I probably drive much safer now that it's less fun. Even though it was just a beat up old passat I always felt like I was in forza driving the manual

  • anyone else using a tortilla press?
  • Instead of using the wax paper, get a large zip lock type bag. Cut it in half along the seams to make a sheet of plastic and then use that between the press and the tortilla. I usually rub the bag with a little bit of fat (lard, oil, etc) to keep them from sticking as much. It's more necessary for corn tortillas but I think it helps either way.

  • Without using pronouns (me, he, she, it, etc) or articles (a, an, the), how did you come up with your user name?
  • Oldslewfoot name of song about big bear named Old slew foot. Good song, good name. Oldslewfoot not bear, but man in bear shape, stole name.

  • Is there a business in your town, which you are 100% sure is a front?
  • Where I live they legalized marijuana, but didn't issue licenses for legal dispensaries for almost two years. Nearly every corner store and head shop is a front . There's even a pizza shop near by with weed for sale openly.

  • How many Lemmy users are non-technical background?
  • Stay at home parent, former chef. The closest thing to tech background I have is electrician training in night school.

  • My GF says I look hot when I do chores. Is this just a ploy to make me do more chores or is it an actual thing?
  • My wife calls it "chore-play" and it seems to really work for her. Even if its a trick, the house will be clean and everyone gets a little fun, what's the harm?

  • Are there any musicians in this group? what do you play?

Here's my guitar, Martin D-16. What's everyone's favorite tunes to jam? Anything you're trying to work on these days?

I'm trying to fill out some content here but posting videos hasn't picked up much involvement or traffic. Let's get this group going with a bit of discussion.

Edit because I asked questions I didn't myself answer:

The first tune I think to play when I'm practicing is usually "Red Haired Boy" or "Salt Creek". I like to mix and match A and B parts from tunes in the same key. These are my favorite "G" warm up exercise.

I'm trying to learn how to play with more focus on melody and avoid just stringing together other people's licks.

Yonder Mountain String Band - Half Moon Rising

Reaching back to my bluegrass awakening with this one. I grew up with the Grateful Dead and punk rock, Yonder was the first bluegrass adjacent group I had the pleasure to see. I still have a hard time with some of these old performances, but every once and a while I just get to missing this time in my life. RIP to the great Jeff Austin, I wish I could still see you make music.

The Tony Rice Unit - Blue Railroad Train

Some of the finest playing, especially Sam's mandolin break. If Tony growls a quick "YEAH" after your break, you're doing something right
