The beta rollout of Private Access Sharing for users on the Visionary plan

from the team:

-------------

Hi everyone,

We are starting the beta rollout of a new feature on Proton Drive: Private Access Sharing. This feature builds on how sharing currently works on Drive by allowing you to share directly using email addresses. For now, it will be available for the Visionary users who have beta access turned on over the next few days.

Now share directly via email

Private Access Sharing allows you to share files and folders directly with specific individuals via their email addresses, providing you with enhanced control and security over your shared content. With this feature, you can:

  • Share securely: Enter email addresses to share files with specific individuals.
  • Assign viewer or editor permissions: Control who can view or edit your files.
  • Revoke access or change permissions: Stay in control of your files at all times.

Proton Drive will continue to support public link sharing alongside private access sharing.

How to Use Private Access Sharing:

  1. Select files or folders: Choose the files or folders you want to share from your Proton Drive.
  2. Add recipients: Enter the email addresses of the people you want to share with.
  3. Set permissions: Assign viewer or editor permissions.
  4. Send securely: Recipients get an email with a secure link to access the shared files.
  5. Manage access: Revoke or change permissions as needed.

!Proton Drive: How to Use Private Access Sharing

During the beta phase, your recipient also needs to be on the beta version to access the items shared with them. They can turn this on via the quick settings by clicking on the gear icon in the top right corner.

Files shared with you via Private Access Sharing will appear in the new Shared with me section.

We invite our Visionary users to try it out and share your thoughts. Your feedback will help us ensure that this feature meets your expectations.

Stay secure,

The Proton Drive Team

    Hi everyone,

We're happy to announce that the new, rewritten Proton Mail Android app is now available to all Proton users on the Google Play store!

For everyone on de-Googled Android devices, you can find the APK file here.

We’ve improved performance and reliability, with up to a 5x reduction in crashes since we started rolling out the updated version. Since the first beta, we’ve added back key features:

🗒️ create and manage your contact group lists

🔑 send password-protected emails (i.e. protect your communication with non-Proton accounts)

💣 set an expiration date to your emails

🗓️ jump directly from your inbox to your Proton Calendar

🌗 switch between light and dark mode

🔒 protect the app with biometric lock

This development provides a solid foundation for delivering new features faster in the future.

We’re looking forward to your feedback, and we’re keeping an eye on our UserVoice to help us decide which features to prioritize next.

    Hi everyone,

We’re back with the most popular blogs from last month:

💜 We have joined forces with r/StandardNotes! In the coming months, we hope to find ways to make Standard Notes more easily accessible to the Proton community.

🎭 In case you missed it, Proton now alerts you if an online service you’re registered for with a Proton Mail address has had a data breach or has been hacked. In the meantime, in early May, we have also implemented a similar service for your Proton Pass aliases and passwords.

🔑 Speaking of passwords, passkeys have remained a big topic: we’ve discussed the Big Tech’s implementation of them, as well as whether they’ll completely replace passwords in the future.

As usual, you were interested in practical matters too, like: 📱 how to create an email account without the phone number verification, 💧 what to do if your data leaks, and 🧩 how to protect yourself from social engineering.

We’ve also analyzed several services’ privacy practices closely. You have been most interested in how Whatsapp treats your photos, and the security of Google Chrome’s password manager and iCloud Keychain.

    from the team:

Hi everyone, This is Andy, Proton founder/CEO here. I just wanted to share the news that Standard Notes and Proton are joining forces.

This was an idea that people from both the Proton and Standard Notes communities have brought up repeatedly over the years, and after discussing it with Mo, the founder of Standard Notes, we both felt it was a good idea.

Both Proton and Standard Notes have unique shared values. We are both community-driven, not VC-financed, and committed to open-source. By joining forces, we hope to deliver more valuable services to both the Proton and Standard Notes user communities. A bit more about this on the Proton blog here.

As always, thanks for your support as we continue to fight for a more private internet, now with even more people on the team!

Is Proton a good choice for what I want to do?
  • . But this doesn’t really matter because autofill is almost completely non-functional anyway. Maybe 5% of the time it works. so you end up having to go back and forth copying and pasting username/email/TOTP

This is certainly incorrect and I wouldn't be too much worried about that. There has been huge improvements since the realease. If there are certain sites that aren't working, they can be reported to the team and it will be fixed. Same as with other password managers.

What's Coming Up For Proton VPN?

    From the team:

    -----

    Hi everyone,

We've been a bit quiet with announcements since the start of the year, with most of our efforts focused on scaling up our server infrastructure to stay ahead of the demands of our rapidly growing supporter base.

This has included adding 14 new countries to support voters in countries with a history of censorship or political interference in the weeks leading up to their election, as well as working to reduce blocking in censored countries, decreasing CAPTCHAs, and increasing download speeds, most notably in France and Germany where we have recently upgraded the last of our 1Gbps servers to 10Gbps. On top of that, we've also added over 700 new servers across multiple countries since the year started, including over 100 in the USA, and more than 50 in the UK, Germany, and Switzerland, each: https://protonvpn.com/vpn-servers/](https://protonvpn.com/vpn-servers

Overall quality, reliability, and performance across all platforms will continue to be a key focus area for us in the coming months.

As some of you have already seen from the Android beta release, we have also been working on an improved user interface to make Proton VPN better for you. Expect to see that out for Android and Windows in the coming weeks, with our other platforms to follow. And if you have feedback for us, please share it in the comments!

But we have also been working away on some of the new features that you have all been asking for. Here is an update from the development team on some of them:

    • Apple TV support: Work has started, and we're aiming for a summer 2024 release.

    • Stealth protocol on the Windows app: We've made a lot of progress on this and should have this out in the summer of 2024 as well.

    • Split Tunneling for the Android TV app: We're aiming for late spring/early summer 2024, to be followed by a split tunneling solution for our macOS app.

    • More for Linux! We just released the Advanced Kill Switch for Linux ( https://protonvpn.com/support/permanent-kill-switch/ ), but there is more to come. Keep an eye out over the next few weeks for a beta of our next feature - Wireguard support.

    • IPv6: Thanks to everyone who helped us with multiple rounds of testing. We're looking to have this out in a summer/autumn 2024 timeframe after the four previously mentioned items are out the door.

As always, thank you for your support and feedback. We wouldn't be able to do it without you.

    Stay safe,

Free servers in countries holding elections in 2024

    From the team:

    ---------

    Hi everyone,

This year, over 60 countries — home to half of the world's population — will hold national elections. As we've seen time and time again, VPNs have repeatedly proven effective anti-censorship tools, allowing people to find trustworthy news sources and access obstructed content.

To ensure people can access accurate information before they cast their vote, we will provide free Proton VPN servers in countries with a history of censorship or political interference in the weeks leading up to the elections:

    https://protonvpn.com/blog/free-servers-before-elections

The selected servers will be switched from paid to free for the election period.

List of countries holding elections this year where Proton VPN will provide free servers:

    • Pakistan (Free servers already available)
    • Turkey
    • Togo
    • Chad
    • Mauritania
    • Rwanda
    • Mozambique
    • Somaliland
    • Mauritius
    • Senegal
    • Algeria
    • South Sudan
    • Venezuela
    • Sri Lanka

List of countries that already held elections and where Proton VPN provided free servers:

    • Cambodia
    • Indonesia

Since we launched Proton VPN Observatory, we have documented spikes in Proton VPN signups in real-time, making it an effective measurement of anti-censorship activity in response to various crises worldwide.

We believe this, along with expanding our server infrastructure to include over 3,600 servers in 85 countries, will help improve the accessibility to an unrestricted, free Internet globally.

    Thank you for your support,

    The Proton Team

The Proton VPN Linux app now supports Permanent Kill Switch!

    From the team;

    -------

    Hi everyone,

As you may know, we released our fully rewritten Proton VPN app for Linux in October 2023, and we’re now making sure it catches up with the rest of the Proton VPN apps in terms of the features it offers.

In November, we added Secure Core, and today, we’re adding the Advanced Kill Switch.

This feature prevents all outgoing and incoming connections outside the VPN interface, meaning that your device will not be able to access the internet unless you connect to one of our VPN servers. You can learn more about how to set it up here: https://protonvpn.com/support/permanent-kill-switch/

More on how to install the Proton VPN Linux app in our support article here: https://protonvpn.com/support/linux-vpn-setup/

    Hi, everyone!

To properly bid farewell to 2023, here's a roundup of the most-read articles on our blog, in case you missed them. As usual, the most popular articles turn out to be the most practical ones:

How to check if your email has been leaked? \- And what you can do about it.

7 tips to check if an email attachment is safe \- Email attachments may contain malware that criminals trick you into downloading, often leading to identity theft, credit card fraud, or other cybercrime.

Price change for Proton Pass Plus

    From the Proton Team:

    ----------------------------

    Hi everyone,

We're making a price adjustment for Proton Pass Plus.

At Proton, we rarely change prices. For example, Proton Mail Plus has had the same price for ten years despite having more features now.

As a community-funded organization, Proton is not primarily profit-driven, and our prices are only influenced by operating costs, not pressure from venture capital investors. As we raise prices when costs increase, we believe it's only fair to reduce prices when costs decrease.

Due to the rapid adoption of Proton's password manager, we've achieved economies of scale sooner than anticipated.

As a result, we're happy to announce that new and existing Proton Pass Plus plan subscribers can now enjoy a reduced monthly price of $1.99 (previously $3.99) on annual subscriptions.

You can find more details in our blog post here: https://proton.me/blog/proton-pass-price-change
