Hi all.
I had taken a break from posting to my magazine due to the lacking in effective moderation tools, especially bans not federating, an issue I don't see a solution for happening any time soon, but I'd quite like too post again. So my question:
I have seen mention in passing of mods saying they have locked a post to comments, and specifically yesterday a mod from slrpnk.net said they were going "to disable public posting and lock all threads". Which made me think that that might work for me.
However, from kbin it looks like I can still comment on posts in the community they said they were locking, so is this an instance-only solution, in a similar way to what banning users seems to be, where it only works locally, but people on other instances can go on interacting externally without issue (and without the mods being able to do anything about those external interactions)?
Is there an existing\* way to just post image links to the fediverse without having to worry about moderating the comments because they're disabled across all instances? I'm not in it for the internet points and am more than happy for people to repost the content I share if they want to have their own conversations, I just can't take it on myself to keep the trash out if I can't actually keep it out.
Thanks!
\*I don't have the knowledge or spare time and energy to invest in learning and then maintaining a self-hosting situation, so that won't work for me
Ok, thanks! What's ernest's magazine called? I'll definitely subscribe to that, and keep an eye on the bug report.
prevent microblogs from federating to a magazine
I didn't even know this was a thing, but definitely sounds like it needs looking in to as well.
Thanks for this info, I guess it's good to know it's on the to do list, but I completely agree, since realising this my motivation to post, knowing my moderation doesn't have any effect on a large chunk of users, has dropped significantly..
Is there a place to check for updates on this, is the post you shared it?
Thanks for explaining, but wow, that's really unfortunate and seems like something that needs addressing, especially since they're the biggest instance.
I thought the whole point was to have the freedom to associate and disassociate with the content of our choosing?
Is there a way to know if/when this is fixed? Because I honestly don't feel comfortable posting the content I do to my target audience if I can't properly keep the trash out.
I've just discovered that lemmy.world (and potentially other) users I've banned from my magazine are still able to comment, comments I can't see on kbin but that do show up on lemmy.world. (E: I already knew removed comments still show up on other instances, but assumed that sorts itself out in time, but now I'm not so sure)
This makes modding futile.
I want to make sure my space is safe and not hostile to those of us who already deal with bullshit everywhere else, and I can't do that when this is the case.
How do we fix this?
Ok thanks, but that's not really what I was asking about
Nope, still the same error. Good suggestion though!
Ok, so trying to post THIS op I got that same error, refreshed and tried again and again the error but on my profile it showed as posted twice but somehow I had no problem deleting THAT duplicate so why can't I delete those on my own magazine? Strange
Sometimes when I upload a link it doesn't load properly, it happens no big deal, but then I can't delete these buggy posts and then I end up unintentionally spamming a bunch of duplicates as I try to post again
Here is an example of one of these attempts https://kbin.social/m/my\_mouldy\_memes/t/445093/Title
The error I get when trying to delete is
We are working on resolving the issues Over the next few days, there will be a change in server infrastructure. Temporary problems with the website's functionality may occur during this time.
Any suggestions?
Except the system isn't failing because it isn't broken. It's working exactly as designed.
I do the same (block/ban), the only reason I noticed them was because I caught a glimpse of the "active users" in my magazine and recognised the cat, and mostly was surprised and disappointed to see them still around..
Thanks for the link!
Definitely appreciate how busy ernest is and his past quick responses to bigotry, which is probably why I'm a little surprised that the TERF magazine has been up for as long as it has, and with as many people complaining.
It'd just be good to know it's on his to do list..
Ok good to know others have also raised concerns, I know ernest and those helping run the site are already busy with a million other things, I just hope this is one of them.
This user runs this magazine which is entirely dedicated to transphobia under the guise of anti-misogyny (usual TERF bullshit).
They came to spread hate on my magazine the first trans supportive post I made, and looks from my "most active users" that they never stopped despite being banned.
Them ghost commenting on my stuff doesn't bother me as long as others don't see it, but this person is clearly dedicated to the sole purpose of spreading anti trans hate, and im wondering why they're still allowed a place on this platform? I don't doubt they've been reported multiple times.
I get "block people you don't like and move on", which I generally do, but this is several levels beyond that, it isn't a personal disagreement, it's outright and intentional spreading of bigotry which I don't believe has a place here.
So how do kbin deal with issues like this?
I'd like to thank the folks who invested their time in providing some really great answers, and also to point out how clearly uninterested the trolls were in actually understanding the meme, since they all seem to have vanished now they can no longer feign ignorance.
Says the white person who upvoted pretty much every single comment opposing it (sorry, pretending to misunderstand).
You're the equivalent of an incel calling any man capable of respectful interaction with a woman a white knight (which they do not because they want to be able to respectfully interact, but because they see respet as transactional).
As always, once you peel back the pseudo intellectual bullshit, it's projection all the way down.
That's some great info, thanks for looking in to it for me! And I had no idea I could make requests!
I feel like the kind folks running kbin have enough to deal with (and I don't have the IT knowledge to know how much work something like that will take), so I feel bad adding to their list, but if it's an idea others would like too maybe it's worth mentioning!
Hey, thanks for replying!
I have put it in the rules, and hopefully people will respect that, but when I'd briefly tried running the magazine/collection on blahaj, there was an actual toggle to stop anyone but mods from posting and I was wondering if such a thing does/could exist on kbin too, because it would be really helpful!
Continuing from my last post here I opened my magazine on kbin instead of blahaj.zone but now I realise I never had the option to lock it so that only I could post to it like I did on blahaj, is that something I can do or is that what I'll have to sacrifice to have my preferred UI? In which case I'm really torn.
This is my first experience with any sort of modding so bare with me lol
Thanks for the recommendation, I like kbin too and would rather just be here. If I can't give this (kbin) user proper mod tools on the blahaj collection via the kbin interface, beyond just posting to it, I'd rather just cut my losses and start again on kbin
E: basically I didn't think through what I was doing this morning and now I have a little mess to clean up lol

A photo of Albert Einstein, around it is his quote:
"Private capital tends to become concentrated in few hands. The result is an oligarchy of private capital the enormous power of which cannot be effectively checked even by a democratically organized political society. This is true since the members of legislative bodies are selected by political parties, largely financed or otherwise influenced by private capitalists who, for all practical purposes, separate the electorate from the legislature. The consequence is that the representatives of the people do not in fact sufficiently protect the interests of the underprivileged sections of the population. Moreover, under existing conditions, private capitalists inevitably control, directly or indirectly, the main sources of information (press, radio, education). It is thus extremely difficult, and indeed in most cases quite impossible, for the individual citizen to come to objective conclusions and to make intelligent use of his political rights."
Looks like that'll work, thanks!
Edit: scratch that, made my kbin user mod of the blahaj collection but can't seem to find modding tools (like banning a user) is that something I'll only be able to do from my blahaj user? Because if that's the case I still might retret fully to kbin
Decided to start my own "sub" and since I like what the blahaj.zone instance is about I did it there, but im actually really hating the lemmy UI. Can I open my magazine on kbin instead and move the content I already put on blahaj across, or do I need to start over?
