The world's semiconductor industry hinges on a single quartz factory in North Carolina
  • I used to work for a foreign company in the US that made this stuff. All the crucibles were made out of graphite, never saw a quartz crucible, maybe they are used in the making of them via ingredient or mold, or maybe they produce a different quality of silicon. We "grew" the silicon into these big (ranging from 2-4ish ft long) cylinder like crystals where they would be shipped off to another area to be sliced into thin wafers for chips. The crucibles were good for maybe I think under 100 runs before they needed to be replaced if they didn't fail before that.

  • The US shouldn't bail out the banks and we deserve another Great Depression
  • OP thinks a bunch of Americans deserve to punished (potentially die), not because of any of their actions, but because the government and private groups (who will be the least effected) victimize said Americans. The beatings will continue until the economy improves, fucking genius.

  • Helldivers 2 is now PlayStation's biggest PC launch by a factor of two
  • The kernel level access anti cheat is a pass for me, the company running it has had breaches before proving it isn't secure and there have been instances where breaches like that allowed a bunch of people to get ransomware on their PCs. I would only play it on playstation 5 if I had one but there is zero chance of putting that on my PC that has all kinds of sensitive information like banking and personal ID stuff. Real shame because I loved the first game.

  • Former Pentagon UFO Investigator Is Pissed Because Congress Believes In Conspiracy Theories
  • We have mathematically worked out near light speed travel, we just lack the energy requirements to test it currently. There are two methods proposed, one being riding a wave we create and the other riding under space(this one was way more confusing). The wave one would accumulate debris ahead of the wave so you aim at a planet then stop short propelling everything the wave has gathered at near light speed into the planet, instant obliteration. We are trying really hard to solve fission which is the only thing holding us up right now. Optimistically we might see a practical test in our life time albeit very late into our lives.

  • PC is the most 'dominant' it's been this decade as two-thirds of devs say they're targeting the platform
  • Life/support expectancy between console and PC, PC wins hands down. Consoles release the next $500+ish version every 8ish years where a PC can pretty easily outlive at least 2 generations of console with minor upkeep and maybe some minor upgrades that cost less then the shitty controllers you have to replace every 6-12 months for $50 - $80

  • America's fractured reality is fueling political violence
  • 9/10 times its a right wing lunatic, shooting up places, shooting up power infrastructure, attempting to bomb places. Its clear through policy and actions being right wing has a prerequisite of mental instability and are not the kind of people who can be allowed to have a voice on matters of the public or government at any level if we want a stable, prosperous country.

  • Protesters calling for cease-fire in Israel-Hamas war block freeway in Seattle for several hours
  • In a society where a huge portion of us are on the cusp of homelessness any threat to your livelihood seems like a threat on your life. I dont agree with it but I totally understand why some people run these protesters over. Last time I heard about one of these they were blocking a mother trying to get her kid to an ER in London. There is an older video of a guy begging them to move so he doesn't lose his job and go back to prison (part of his parole). Threatening peoples livelihoods to make them agree with your politics sounds a lot like terrorism and I absolutely hate these kinds of protests. They could at least leave one lane open so people are slowed and see your message still but they dont. Also how privileged are these people that they can do this and dont have to go work instead? Must be really nice to have enough that you dont have to worry about making rent this month or feeding your children

  • What's involved in your budgeting method?
  • We pay bills, rent, get food (all generic and heavy sales) then the money is gone. Its a good month if we have 20$ at the end of the month, thats how we budget, by having no money. Donated a decent amount to medical aid for Ukraine and ate plain rice most of that month, priorities

  • How social media’s biggest user protest rocked Reddit
  • Left reddit recently bc of the toxicity, massive noticeable uptick across most subs. Blatant racism, homophobia and hate in general with next to zero moderation. The ads were just cancer(without a blocker) with the sponsored "he gets us" ones being unblockable and funded by a christian hate group prominently showing up constantly. Kbin has been an alright replacement minus the server issues recently
