  • Only like 3.5% of the world's population lives in the US. So if you happen to live in a country that has been negatively affected by US foreign policy in the last 50 years and don't much care what happens to people inside the US right now, or what labels and pins they put on their jackets, yeah there is little difference between red and blue. Like if you ignore what ideological they profess to and simply look at their actions on other countries.

Empathy can be "disabled" though certain ideology or religion. Saying such radical things like "no difference" is an attempt help people snap out of this "sociopathic trance". Or at worst an attempt to mock or scold you for defending an imperialist regime that has caused countless deaths and immense suffering over the last 7 decades.

Obviously this is futile. And lemmy is much more pleasurable when blocking such people.

  • If you imagine some kind of multi year "relationship education" instead of just sex ed where all kids at ~14 learn about pathological psychology and all the ways people can manipulate you or fuck you over I imagine it would be far less off a problem.

  • No somthing more than just "mere" syntax highlightinng or prettifying like e.g. in VS Code. Being able to change line height for a "headline" when you declare a new class. Or maybe lines that illustrate how a temp variable is used. But it's all vague ideas and I can't picture or describe it well and you'd have to demo this with a graphical design tool I think.

  • Is there some language or "syntax formatter" that turns source code into something more off a visual programming language? Like a WYSIWYG markdown editor.

Like python doesn't have curly braces, but you could add some kind of "block illustration".

Or you could have illuminated initials for variable names to make them more unique.

  • I actually think often about how franchises are (miss)managed and how IP laws suck and should work. Just watched "Dune Prophecy" yesterday, which I avoided so far because it's partially based on Frank Herbert's hack writer of a son's novel (it was ok though). Besides the profit motive, there it seems more like a psychological need to bastardize the franchise. Marvel was never serious so I don't mind it much, it's just annoying. Star Wars sequels suck but again, never was serious literature. I do hate the new Star Trek Kelvin timeline with a burning passion though because Star Trek was a cultural touchstone.

  • Haha forgot about the Hobbit and didn't know about the anime. Comics, well, whatever. But I don't think it can be compared to the constant marketing and big screen content of the other franchises. Tolkien estate is pretty careful not to turn out endless pulp.

  • I believe most image generating models are too small (like only 4GB RAM). Deepseek R1 is 1.5TB ram (or half or quarter that at reduced precision) to get some semblance of "general knowledge". So to get the "semantics" of an image right, not just the "syntax" you'd need bigger models and probably more data describing images. Of course, do we really want that?

  • I think ultimately we need to design an economic system that allows less work and less consumption. You want those outsourced jobs to come back but done by robotics. Coming back to stop needing to ship them halfway across the world, wasting energy. But we need to have a clear(er) vision to what we want to transition to. Like a partially planned and circular economy that covers the basic needs (food, living space, education, news, healthcare) for everyone for free. Otherwise there is nothing to believe in.

  • r/changemyview is one of those "fascist gateway" subs, or at least one of the subs that I suspect as that. The gateway works by introduing "controverial" topics which are really fascist but they get upvote because "look at this idiot!". But slowly it moves the overton window and gives those people who actually do believe in inequality a space to grow in. Opinions that are racist, anti-feminist, anti-trans, ultra-nationalist, authoritarian or generally against equality and justice.

Reddit was slowly boiled over the last decade like a frog.

And you can be absolutely sure that not only researchers are researching this for science, there are plenty of special interests that do this. It really started with climate change denial.

  • It's be interesting how the fascist agitprop will boost this show. We've seen many cases of feminist or pro trans themes in shows incurred massive backlash from influencers and their hordes. Part of the "culture war". I'd expect a lot of hype and praises for the show no matter how good or bad it is.

  • It's a bit unfair to rope LOTR into this, it only has a single spin-off series which is pretty great. Which is pretty great if you're not a fascist or hardcore nerd of the books. And hardcore nerds only have "fun" criticism discussing how the story spanning 3000 years is being adapted.

  • But as far as I can remember, you can't administer the rooms in a space as one. Like you need to be invited into each separate room.

Not saying that you couldn't add that, I'm saying they don't seem to want to "do what discord did". Which is a bummer since the success of discord clearly shows what would be needed.

PS: It's fine to do that as a UX design choice, more like IRC. But the issue is that people like you (no offense) say it's the same when it isn't. Like not even understanding what the problem is.

  • The US will not allow them to take Taiwan, too much at stake. Doubtful we’ll initiate.

But the US already did since Biden. They named Taiwan an "important strategic military partner" which goes much further. Basically the US is putting it's finger on the map halfway around the world right in front of China's doorstep and saying "this is ours" while China says it is theirs. Obviously Taiwan DID belong to greater China and even though I don't especially support reunification it's a slap in the face. Instead of letting sleeping dogs lie.

It's always the press and people portraying the US has not doing anything but inviting countries into their military alliance. It's dangerous warmongering. Yes, and the same happened in Ukraine.

I can see the opinions after another proxy war breaks out, oh those evil Chinese devils / yellow orcs! Appeasement doesn't work, they want to gobble up all the world like Hitler!

Hopefully China is smarter or the USA collapses before that can happen.
