What's a good piece of hardware to run a jellyfin server?
  • I'm hosting mine on an old i5-750 (yeah, not 7500...), with an GeForce gt640 and 4GB of ram... Never encountered any problems whatsoever.

I would take a hot take and say, any old pc that you can find will do just fine.

  • Image flickering bug
  • Hey, sorry for the delay!

I'm happy to report that after updating to version 166, the issue almost disappeared! Image posts flicker no more!

Only flickering I'm experiencing is with community/user icons, and this does affect all views. But that's such a small bug that I wouldn't consider it as high priority...

(Image posts flickering itself was in my opinion a huge deal, especially for people suffering from epilepsy etc.)

  • Image flickering bug

Hey there, not sure if this is the right place to report bugs with the app... If not, I would be grateful if someone redirected me to the correct place.

The only issue I have with the app since the dawn of lemmy is image flickering whenever I approach the end of the feed. As there are less and less posts left, the flickering intensifies. This applies to post images, community/user icons, URL previews etc.

I'm having this issue on Samsung Galaxy A51, running Android 13 and One UI 5.1, and the latest version of the app (163). Will provide any additional info, if needed.

  • I'm pretty sure it's about Cities Skylines II.

I've bought it myself and I personally don't care about the optimizations + developers warned about it a few times. Still a lot of people get mad and I'm not sure why.

  • PSA: Plasma Wayland on laptop could still be a pain to use
  • I do agree, and I've never said that. All I'm saying is that Plasma Wayland on laptops is for many people pain to use (and it looks like many agree with me here too).

I do believe that this should be resolved as Plasma 6 is shifting towards Wayland-first approach, and this would annoy most laptop users.

  • PSA: Plasma Wayland on laptop could still be a pain to use
  • I do not know about any workarounds but you might have more luck searching for one.

As for other issues, someone mentioned in the issue that the "Disable touchpad while typing" is broken on Wayland too; however both of these issues are not present on X11. Only other issue I'm having is kde daemon crashing while running pacman -Syu inside Konsole (see this link). Other than that, I was with Plasma more than happy and had no other issues.

  • PSA: Plasma Wayland on laptop could still be a pain to use

I thought it would be great to spread awareness about this issue, hence I'm sharing it with you here.

In X11 there is a nice feature called "Turn off touchpad while mouse is plugged in" - it's a lifesaver when you have a laptop with big touchpad; me and lots of people with this issue accidentally hit it all the time while typing.

    !Plasma X11 touchpad settings

However in Wayland this setting is missing. After some digging people found out that this is not an issue with the libinput driver itself (used for touchpads on Wayland), as it is supporting this feature for a while now; rather it's an issue with the settings app itself, simply not implementing this feature while using Wayland.

Hope this will get attention from the community, as the recognition from the dev's side is minimal.

  • You don't wanna e.g. download more RAM? Well your bad, thanks to this product I have 128 TB of memory on my Xiaomi laptop and it keeps getting bigger! Plus, I have a guaranteed upgrade to Windows, 12, 13 and 14 too!

The Distrochooser helps you to find the suitable Linux distribution based on your needs!

    Distrochooser

I found this site a while back - basically it will ask you a bunch of questions on your usage of your PC, and will came out with a list of recommended distros, and a list of reasons why YOU could like or not like it.

There are some similar sites to this one, but since I'm not familiar with them, I won't post them. They are simply DuckDuckGo-able though.

  • Wdym? The community here is already much better than on Reddit. Same post there was met with little notice, and all of that was like "stop shilling, loser".

I believe I'm quite settled here already, using Jerboa on my phone. One thing that could help get more people here in my opinion is promotion of the "lemmy" "brand". Now when I try to lookup the lemmy keyword on my search engine, I have to scroll waay below the first results (which is not a behavior of most users). Why isn't e.g. the "official" app called simply Lemmy, but instead "Jerboa"? I assure you this is confusing for many people.

Anyways, thank you for welcoming me! I see great potential in Lemmy (compared to e.g. Mastodon, which is dependent on specific people and not communities).

TLDR: Met with awesome community already, but the app is a little bit confusing.

  • For me two things come to mind:

    • X's influence - they are doing some stupid $hit (like removing ability to block people). So I guess my brain decided it is fed up with corpo apps.
    • degradation of content quality - I feel like Reddit has served it's purpouse, and I struggle to find something funny and/or informative. When I opened Lemmy for the first time, at least 4 interesting articles came on my feed.
  • Glad to be here

Friendship ended with Reddit, now Lemmy is my best friend
