Take in mind that lot of btrfs features need to be disabled (noCOW flag) for VM workloads to have acceptable performance. I usually just take the hit in performance if i need a VM (it's not my primary use), but it is there and is noticeable.

The inability to install Steam i can blame on PopOS. He could genuinely don't know that you should update your system first.
