Pronouns in non-English Languages
  • For Spanish, contrary to what conservatives say, the “white liberals in California” did not invent what we call inclusive language/pronouns. The @ and the X were being used by people like me some 20 years ago, within Latin American communities.

Yeah, it's really infuriating seeing people act like this stuff is new. I grew up in south america, a couple of blocks from a state Faculty of Psychology, the student body was like 80% female and there was a strong presence of feminist advocacy groups (regular marches, public events, ever-present banners and posters, etc). I remember reading signs using "TOD@S" or "TODXS" decades ago.

  • Games that Don't Fake the Space
  • Jacob Geller is one of the best video-essayists on YouTube. The thoughtfulness with which he approaches games as pieces of art is rare, the sleek, striking way he presents his theses is rarer still. There are youtubers that I find more entertaining (HBomberguy, Folding Ideas) but no one that I find more engaging.

"Who’s Afraid of Modern Art: Vandalism, Video Games, and Fascism" in particular had a profound impact on me (also loved the one about Golems). Being able to watch the better version of his videos (without the butchering to avoid YouTube's copyright strikes) is like 80% of the reason why I got a Nebula subscription.

  • What game do you think came closest to being "perfect"?
  • Outer Wilds. I consider it the best video game ever made and I've spent quite some time thinking about if there's something I could add, change or remove that would improve it and so far I've yet to come up with anything of substance (beyond tiny QoL changes or reeeally nitpicky stuff).
