There is no reason to not do it the modern way where all the handshaking and connecting is done under the hood, hidden from the user. At the most you as a user should only see the tiny little systray icon switch how it looks.

You might like to check out the story of Jill Bolte Taylor. A brain scientist who lost contact with her left hemisphere due to a stroke. Then later when she had healed wrote a book about it all.
Interestingly a lot of what she (and you?) experienced is what you experience during Awakening/Realization.
