I tried fusion360 last week and it was broken; some big update they released broke it and now I just gagged to wait for it to get fixed, I guess. Will try it again in a month or so asked are if it’s fixed… but I’ve always had awful luck getting wine working. Same w/ photoshop
Honestly, kinda glad that my win10 PC “doesn’t have the specs” to run win11. Stupid, because I’m running an 18-core Xeon w/ 128 gigs of ram and a 2070 super, but of course the stupid TPM chip. But oh well, guess I won’t be able to get ads on my own product.
The bummer is I’ll likely need to install it on something because I occasionally need to go back to windows to use certain programs… maybe someday wine will work well enough to actually use reliably…

I’ve tried out FreeCAD and it’s decent - but it’s really tough to get a hang of. Ondsel has a bit of a better interface imo and is based directly off of FreeCAD. Maybe give either of those a shot?

That’s awesome - good tip. I think I’m going to try to find someone to mimic the physical leaf I like as closely as possible. How much did it hurt to get it done on your shoulder blade? I’ve heard mixed things and my only tattoo was on the outside of my shoulder and didn’t really hurt much at all. Have also heard that when they go back to fill in the color, it hurts much more
Huh, that’s certainly interesting! The hacky solution ended up having to do with power states which is kinda annoying - I have to set the GPU to use max power state because if it goes into the min state and then I walk away for 5-10 mins, it drops out of the PCIe slot and I need to reboot. SSH still works but you can’t reattach it w/o a reboot. I’m running a PCIe gen 5 mobo though and I heard about some potential problems with that, so maybe that was related. Could also be the fact that I ran a Quadro RTX 4000 on the same system/OS for a year or so and didn’t want to do a full reinstall, so it probably had somewhat to do with leftover drivers and crap
I set up my 4070 TS (the brand new one) on Ubuntu 22.04 about two months ago and my god was it a pain in the ass. Took like two days to do and even after that it would still hit a screen freeze issue every thirty minutes that took another week to find a half-assed solution for…

Easiest GitHub install I have ever done - works well on both Linux and windows per my own testing. Go onto the Automatic1111 stable-diffusion-webui github and find the git clone link, and then, from a command shell, use “cd” to get into your directory of choice and then do a “git clone <link>”. After that, go into said folder and literally just run the webui.bat/.sh file (might be called webui or might be called setup, can’t remember). That’s it - it should install all of the packages and python stuff and everything for you, and from there, honestly just fuck around with it for a while. On Linux, I had to install a few extra things/screw around a bit to get it working fully, but it wasn’t too tough. I highly recommend also installing the “dynamic prompts” extension and playing around with wildcards and such. Civitai has some great models and LoRAs you can play around with, too - Dreamshaper is a great one. If you’ve not got a 4000-series GPU, I would suggest editing the webui-user.bat/sh file and adding “—medvram” or “—lowvram” to help you get higher res images at the cost of a little bit of speed. Let me know if you’ve got any more questions! If nothing else, it’s honestly just a lot of fun to use.
Shitty k8s cluster/space heater?
I’m very new to home networking. I’m not new to computers (hardware or software) - but for whatever reason, anything network-related has always been an enigma to me.
That said - I just got a new (to me) server. It’s a beefy one (made a post about it in another community). And so I figured why not just start playing around with Proxmox, learning some new things and spinning up a bunch of random VMs and whatnot.
I figured the first step would be to set up something such that I can connect to my computers from anywhere - and I’ve already done so. For that, I used Tailscale. But my question, I suppose, is now that my computers are on the internet (as in, for real on the internet, through Tailscale) - are there security precautions I have to take now and things I need to be more concerned about? Do I have to set up my own special firewall to make sure I don’t get hacked or something? I am honestly pretty clueless in that whole domain. So… ELI5 what I have to do, security-wise. Any and all help is welcomed and appreciated.
Bonus question: beefy server is beefy (yes yes, lots of power consumption, I’ve already come to terms with it. About 200W idle and should run me ~$40/mo.). Dual 18-core E5-2699 v3s. 768GB of RAM. More SSD storage in both boot drives and storage drives than the average human would use in a thousand years (SAS, SATA, & NVMe). I asked this over on c/piracy - what should I do with it? I’ve put Proxmox on it, and as said above, plan on learning things about VM hosting and different operating systems and whatnot. I’m also planning on hosting my own Jellyfin server. But… what else? Does anyone have any good ideas for any (non-GPU-intensive) things I can do with the server? Anything and everything welcome, lol - I wanna have fun with this thing!

Alright, this may be a bit of a loaded question. But I figured it may provide good insight to both myself and to others. I just came into a pretty beefy server - dual Xeon E5 2699 v3’s (18 cores each), 768 gigs of RAM. Ten front drive bays, 6 of which have 7.68T NVMes and 4 of which have 15.36T SAS drives. I’m thinking the NVMe drives will go into a single RAID 5 or 6 (thoughts?), and the 15360s I plan to use for more sensitive stuff so I’m planning dual RAID 1’s there. Boot drives will be a hardware RAID 1 of dual 1920G SATA SSDs. So again… pretty beefy. I believe this server would cost me ~$100/month to run, although I may try something where I keep it off 6/7 days of the week and only turn it on if I need it otherwise, I’m not sure yet. Thoughts on that are welcome too.
All of that said. I’ve got the power & the storage for some pretty neat projects. But I’ve not delved into anything of this nature before. I’ve heard of Plex, I’ve heard of Jellyfin, but I don’t really know what it all means past that. And I think it would be pretty neat to be able to dump some streaming service subscriptions and make up for a bit of the coin I’d be dumping to power this thing (may also host a Minecraft server with it, lol).
I’m very familiar with Linux/console, so that’s not really an issue. I’m erring towards either Arch or Ubuntu (fight me, I like both).
Thoughts? Ideas? I figured this was a good community to post this in but can remove if it isn’t.
