  • Meh. There really isn‘t a lot there. The short film mentioned has largely been regarded as a complete flop with no critical acclaim whatsoever. It‘s regarded so bad it’s essentially a meme. A real slop fest.

As for copyright: Using models trained on copyrighted material is more of a gray area than being explicitly allowed. They literally mention the act went active in 2019. That is before the rise of AI. So if anything they‘re just really behind the curve and not so much embracing technology.

This reminds me of the saying that Japan has been in the year 2000 for the past 40 years. Some older folks somehow still think it‘s some futuristic paradise for sci-fi nerds when that hasn‘t been the case for over 20 years.

  • That‘s the critical one. It‘s not about budget or outsourcing or whatever. It comes down to who makes the decisions and why. In a lot of cases it‘s people with a finance background who couldn‘t care less about the medium they‘re working with and that can be a major issue. Gaming being a bigger industry than music and film combined has attracted a lot of people who only think in dollar bills and it shows. Luckily however, there are still a lot of passionate teams with leaders who have a love for games.

  • I want to believe this is just s straw man argument but sadly I know there are enough jerks out there who absolutely call everything that doesn’t cater precisely to toxic masculinity wOkE.

I think it‘s a bit of a bummer that the ending of Witcher 3 that does make the most sense in-universe isn‘t canon in favor of what I think is pure fan service. I will probably still play the shit out of this though because all of their games have been hitters for me. Even Cyberpunk at launch. Even Witcher 1.

  • That’s good news. Internet archiving is an important endeavor because you never know when they‘ll pull the plug. Now it‘s a little more secured and probably far more useful than in Discord‘s hands alone.

  • There’s a blind spot in your argument though. They shipped out everything they could before tariffs hit. Doesn‘t mean they produced all of that recently. They very likely slowed down production a while ago because of these economic uncertainties and instead focused on getting as much out of the country as possible of what they still had laying around. So yes the economy could make an unexpected jump before sliding down quickly. It‘s a bad thing for the economy mid term.

  • Not being able to criticize leaders that the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants against is bonkers and simple censorship.

EDIT: After reading the official announcement thoroughly, I have to say the title seems... wrong? There are very specific things that are not allowed, some of which I can agree with. Others however, I do not.

  • Of course it's not just Japan but this is about Anime. It's the best 2D animation the world has to offer right now so the loss in quality will be felt. It's also not just about AI. The corporate space simply does not value creative work other than finding creative ways to raise quarterly profits and that has become increasingly obvious in Japan were many of us thought things would be at least a little different. Nope. Same shit as Disney, just delayed slightly.
