  • Engaging on the platform and even constantly talking about the platform is a great sign of it's lasting influence.

You do realize you're on a sub dedicated to reddit, right? It's hypocritical if you're telling users to not engage yet stay in a sub that talks about the site.

Also, this is wrong. Advertisers do care about the traffic, but they also care about stability and how their brands will be perceived. This is why nsfw reddits don't advertise. Now put yourself in the shoes of an advertiser: there's a lot of traffic on reddit but there's a lot of hate and vitriol, with the threat of users leaving and just a lot of bots propping the communities up. Would you spend money to advertise on such a volatile site when there are literally other, maybe even bigger, sites available to you without all the BS or threats to how your brand/product will be perceived? I mean, you might. But you've probably made tons of better business decisions than that.

  • Another thing I keep forgetting to add is the exposure. I'm honestly shocked at how mamy people are ignorant to the protests. A lot of them don't even know who spez is. Even if they don't leave reddit, they'd at least have an idea of what reddit is becoming.

Would they care? Maybe not. But they can't even decide for themselves if they don't even know wtf is going on.

  • Do you really think we have any chance of driving engagement/traffic up (or down) in any significant way? You are overestimating our numbers and vastly underrating theirs.

  • Why tf are people and companies allowed to trademark a freaking letter?

  • Honestly, even if the whole lemmy.world (for example) joins, it won't matter. The bots and streamers (and their fanbase) alone outnumber us too much for us to even make a dent on their traffic. People here are grossly underestimating the number of bots and reddit users. Like they think because some protestors join it's suddenly going to drastically shoot their engagement numbers up. Lol.

  • Another thing is that the number of people doing the protests are insignificant if you consider the botters and streamers. I mean, even if NONE of the protestors engage in r/place, it will barely touch their metrics.

This is anecdotal, but I saw one person in Discord claiming (and showing screenshots) of having 500+ bots. And that's just 1 person.

  • I hate some food, should I stop eating now? Pretty sure you do, too. Do you still eat? (also, I'm asian so don't tell me you don't hate any food or I'll put you up to it lol)

This is an overly simplistic take (and a blatantly reddit way of thinking - black and white, anyone?). Now I don't use reddit anymore but went back for r/place. Why? Because I felt like spreading the word about alternatives (not just lemmy/kbin) is much better than just letting do their thing. I've already explained in a recent post how that won't affect traffic much, so I won't explain anymore. After that, I'm deleting everything again. I hate spez and what he is doing to reddit, but do I hate the small niche reddit communities I've made connections with over the years?

  • In my instance, we use Arch.

Jk. We're pretty chill although we're too small to be anywhere popular. We like memes but not really overrun with it. The admin and the owner are nice and relaxed. Not much content since we're just a small group, but some members are pretty active in their communities.

  • Ah yes, the old "It's still engagement" angle.

Do you really think it would be a major addition to their views if even a whole major instance of lemmy joined? The bot accounts alone being used there would overshadow the number of lemmings that engage there. And that doesn't even count streamers with tens of thousands of minions. Even if 20,000 lemmings went there, it won't make a mark. A lot of people, shockingly, are still ignorant of what happened. Idk how that's even possible but there you go.

They. Will. Get. Their. Views. Regardless.

Might as well get something out of it.

Your engagement is more important to them than your message.

Not if your message would prevent them from using it for advertisers. They've been removing nipples, dicks, piss, guillotines, etc and people still put them there. How do you think advertisers will react to that when they don't want their brands associated with "unsavory" stuff?

  • It fluctuates. I'm back on 18 according to Connect. It's not reliabke enough to be used fir a karma system, which is good imho.

  • Pretty hard to choose, TBH. I'll go with 3:

    1. A Day in the Life
    2. Here Comes the Sun
    3. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

Those would probably be my top 3 normally.

  • It's not similar between apps, either, even with the same account. If you're on Android, you can use Voyager and Connect and it'll show you different numbers. Another thing is that it fluctuates. I see my "karma" on Voyager is around 14 points now, whereas I made a post comment quite recently where I also checked and I had around 40.

So as a karma system, it's unreliable enough imho that it's not gonna (or shouldn't) affect users as much as reddit's karma system. It's also another reason why I decided not to switch to kbin.

  • I just saw your post. I have this thread bookmarked since it's pretty interestibg, tbh. I'd love to know what exactly happened.

I completely agree wih those 3 points, although I do think #1 is pretty weak (no offense, but I considered that and I wrote it off).

#2 is interesting because of the timing. I saw the owner post about it, but there was no indication that he was in a panic because of it. Personally, so far I am leaning towards this as the smoking gun, although the donation links being down kind of throws a wrench there.

#3 is something I believe can be significant. Problem is idk much about that area.

What's your personal opinion about what happened?

  • Yeah. This is probably it. Kbin, lemmy.ml, etc. all went down at some point in June. Idk about Mastodon, though, but the graphs line up with what I remember happened in June.

  • Finally someone who gets it. Imo, the comments asking those people to hand over bank details and similar stuff can harm the argument. I mean, if someone told me that, I'd just say I do that every time I go to the bank. Or my bank has those details and they're made up of people like me. It won't really convince me that privacy is important since most of them probably have never experienced getting their accounts hacked.

  • Valid point (and one I initially did not consider). But I still stand by what I said, although I admit it can be more flexible if you're contractually bound to write a series. Maybe a few years' worth of extensions per entry or it starts after a series is over? Certainly not 70 years after an author's death. We know books depend on popularity to sell, and we've seen only a few (relatively) authors get rich on their books alone.

10 years is a long time - I would not stay in a job that doesn't pay enough for my needs for 10 years no matter how much I enjoy it. My problem is I admittedly am not well-versed in that specific industry (trusted resources are welcome as I've tried searching but I don't recognize many of the websites so idk how reliable they are). But an increase in salary (or advances) and/or royalties may be in order. I think everyone is entitled to that at this point.

Again, this is from my admittedly limited knowledge in that specific industry, so feel free to correct me. It's just that imho IP rights, as they are today, is kind of ludicrous.

  • I agree with you both, although imho 15/20 is a bit too long? The only reason being something can be improved better(?) by multiple entities working on it (competitively) than a single entity. Maybe 10 years? I'm thinking if I have an invention (let's say a new engine), 10 years should be enough for me to earn my share. After that, other companies/individuals can use my base/foundation and build on it. With more people working on that engine and competing with each other, the end product would probably be much better than when I work at it alone.
