  • The moment of the explosion in Donetsk.
  • I'm no expert, but at first glance that looks like a BLEVE to me instead of ordnance detonation. Too much fuel slowly burning off after the fact. Could very well have been a strike that hit a fuel truck or something ofc, but my bet is either neglect or sabotage of some fuel store.

Edit: oh, and the falling large debris in the last clip of the actual explosion is why you do not assume being anywhere near the blast radius is safe. If you ever see a fuel tank of any type burning you turn and run and get to cover strong enough to withstand whatever is burning landing on it from 2km high.

  • Russia: Loss of state-owned energy giant Gazprom, the first in decades, shows the Kremlin's struggle to fill EU gas sales gap with China
  • There's nothing 'disingenuous' about calling it a 'loss'. It clearly states they posted a 7 bill NET loss. Not projected, not relative to the past... net. loss. They paid $7 bill to stay in business this year and are cancelling dividends. Their sales of gas reduce by more than 50% in 1 year. They aren't 'welcoming' anything. They are praying doing business in Asian markets will be enough to bring them back to profitability and the latter half of the article makes it clear this is very unlikely for a few years at least.

This is imo the best news I've read all year in that it shows strong evidence the sanctions are working. I just hope they hurt enough that Russia retreats from Ukraine, and gives up their plan of continental conquest for good, but I'm not holding my breath.

  • The total combat losses of the enemy from 24.02.22 to 23.05.24
  • Right now Russia is not forcing anybody in combat.

There are numerous examples of Russia conscripting unwilling 'volunteers' as punishment for criminal offences, protesting, etc... Additionally, a policy of 'advance or be shot' strains the credulity of the claim 'nobody is being forced into combat'.

  • I was going to remove this post for not being explicitly related to Ukraine but opted to leave it up so this question could be asked and answered for those that don't know the reason(s). In the future the answer should be more polite as this is one of the last places on Lemmy where the realities of this war are disseminated without an obvious pro-Russian bias, and good questions should be encouraged.

  • TIL That the singer of the Peanut Butter Jelly Time song has always been credited to the wrong person.
  • ;tldw Video claims PBJ time singer was incorrectly attributed to Jermaine Fuller (who is also alleged to be Snoop Dog's brother in-law) and spends 12 minutes describing their entire 'research' path to discovering DJ Chipman is the actual singer with 'Raylo and His Dawgs' co-producing. I have no idea what the latter half of the video rambles on about.

Estonia ‘seriously’ discussing sending troops to ‘rear’ jobs in Ukraine, official says
  • 2 Things:

Firstly, Article 5 does not apply to OP's question until Estonia the nation gets attacked. Support troops sent to Ukraine that came under attack could not be used to trigger that article. This is the risk they take.

Second, you misunderstand the wording of Article 5 during an hypothetical attack on a member nation directly. It is not subjective. "An attack on one IS an attack on all". ALL nations would act as if they are under attack. It is their individual responses that are where any possible 'subjectiveness' kicks in meaning each nation would send what it CAN, not everything and the kitchen sink without regard for its own security. That is what that means. This idea that a member nation required to behave like it is under attack would do nothing is... misguided.

  • Russian factories claimed to have delivered 1,500 main battle tanks this year, of which 1,180 to 1,280 had been reactivated from storage

They actually 'produced' ~300. Pulling out 1200 tanks from mothballs can only be done until stores are exhausted.

  • How NATO & Russia are Preparing to Fight Total War
  • While being aware of worst case scenarios for Ukraine and Moldova is prudent, and a good argument for why all Western nations should be getting involved as much as possible, this video is mostly fear mongering. It specifically jumps the shark when it gives the Article 5 'what if teknikully' argument allowing Baltic invasion but makes flawed assumptions and uses bad numbers well beforehand (producing 1500 tanks/year now? lul).

    Remote Moderation and Pinning

Moderating a community on another server and having several problems: I pin a post for rules clarification and within a day the pin gets removed and the post starts sinking. Worse, the post still shows pinned in my instance so it looks like everything is okay. Attempts to work around this by promoting another account ON that community's server don't go through.

Is there a way to make a pin permanent and visible across all instances?

On the Subject of "Rule 1"

Recently there has been an upsurge in lamentation for the demise of invaders portrayed in various formats herein. No matter how well intentioned it comes across as sympathizing with the invaders, and without fail incites anger and vitriol. While understandable, emotional responses that exceed common decency will still be dealt with per server rules. However, I feel the need to clarify what Rule 1 "Remember the Human" means in this community:

It means "remember the humans, probably not even in frame, being forced to perform these traumatizing actions". Deaths of invaders are just and deserve no sympathy here particularly because it is insensitive to the innocent people forced to endure these (and far worse) atrocities daily.

Are you personally horrified at the tragedies readily on display here? That's fine. We understand War has a cost on humanity. It is unpleasant by design and this isn't news. That said, we'd prefer if seeing the reality deeply upsets you that you simply not visit here, or, at the very least you are now expected to keep your lamentations out of this community because like it or not it comes across as mocking the true victims in all this: the Ukrainian civilians subjected to daily warcrimes, and their valiant protectors risking their lives and PTSD to defend them.

NATO Spending in 2023: The Race to Rearm - Is NATO answering the Russian Challenge?

2022 dramatically changed rhetoric around NATO's strategic position and the importance of conventional military deterrence and preparedness, particularly in Europe.

While many politicians were quick to speak on the need to respond decisively to the new envioronment, both by aiding Ukraine and also building up domestic capability, there was an open question over whether the will and capacity was there to convert announcements into orders and deliveries.

Today, we look at NATO defence spending estimates for 2023 to get an idea of what patterns are emerging, and ask how NATO is responding to the Russian challenge.

Alright, I've had enough. Youtube is Garbage

They got rid of the Dislike button. Fine. They changed the Homepage to 2 ginormous thumbnails per row. WTF are they thinking? They doubled down and forced that change onto the Subscription page too when people started just using that instead. Now I'v noticed a LOT of videos posted from subscribed creators do not appear on the subscriptions page at all. Go to homepage? There it is plain as day. I'd complain (30second unskippable ad) about the (30second unskippable ad) annoying bombardment (30second unskippable ad) of advertising on (30second unskippable ad) the platform but (30second unskippable ad) I use Ublock.

There has to be some sort of competitor (not Twitch) that is a reasonable equivalent? I'm at my wits end here. It seems all Media Content online has become outright hostile to consumers and I want to go to war.
