Five years later, ultrasonic fingerprint sensors are finally coming to more Android phones
  • I have the P9p and have more issues with the (ultra sonic) sensor than I did with the (optical sensor) on the previous P8p.

I even compared both in hand before trading in the older phone and the P8p scanning was much better.

Though I have to mention; to improve the optical sensor reading I had to do 4 fingerprints with different brightness for each scan, and that what helped a lot.

Too bad I can't do the same with the Ultrasonic sensor since it doesn't care about the brightness on the screen.

  • Android Identity Check will secure your phone from even a stolen PIN
  • I learned it from another poster. I did the brightness trick when when I setup my fingerprintes (you setup four finger prints with the same finger, but with each fingerprint setup you change the brightness by %25 step. you start with the lowest brightness [assume it's 0%] to the highest [%100] with each setup).

Thanks to that trick, I had at least %80 unlock success rate with my previous pixel 8P Pro!

I upgraded to the P9 Pro with the ultrasonic sensor, and unfortunately it's actually worse than the optical for me, and add to that brightness trick doesn't work with it either since it uses a different tech...

  • Google introduces compact Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL
  • I had the P8P and i'm getting the smaller P9P. see my previous comment for more details but basically I went with the Bestbuy pre order because they were giving away $200 giftcard in top of the $625 trade in credit.

  • Google introduces compact Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL
  • Me too! I initially I wanted to wait for the (Pixel X?) for the TSMC based processor.

but since the Pixel 9 brought QOL improvements like the Ultra sonic finger print, improved Telephoto Autofocus and smaller Pixel Pro that can be used in one hand. Top that with $625 credit and $200 BB giftcard. I couldn't hold anymore and gave in :)

  • How VPN connection affects your phone’s battery life?
  • Since you mentioned wireguard. I can't fight the argue to mention the remarkable app called "Rethink". This app finally let me use wirequard and local DNS blocking at the same time. it also got a big variety of settings and filters. and top of that it's opensource! I no longer need or use Blokada after I found this app.

now that I got that out of the way, I feel much better right now :)

Automatically turn off cellular when on wifi?
  • I think it made little difference for me in terms of battery drain

If you have a Pixel 6/7 or any phone that uses Exynos modem in general, it will make a noticeable difference in battery life. Simply because the modems are not as as efficient as the Qualcomm modems.

Source: I found the tip under r/GooglePixel and I noticed the battery life difference on my P7pro

  • While Android as a whole continues to shrink in the US, Google Pixel keeps growing
  • it's hard to recommend the pixels when my own 7Pro has dust on the selfie camera but also it's under the screen!!

I also suggested the phone to my friend when I got mine and she constantly keeps complaining about the battery. I should had told her to stick with the iPhone and be done. Thanks Google for the shitty hardware! and thanks to the Government for keeping Huawei, ZTE and Xiaomi out of the US market.
