Montana Of 300 - Chiraq (Remix)
  • This was the best of the remix's that Montana did imo, but he was on fire for a little while there. Wish he could have converted it in to a good album or two, but he only ever seemed to be really good on other people's beats.

How come nobody seems to do remix's like this anymore? It used to be a whole thing but I feel like I don't see it any more. Maybe I'm just out of touch.

  • Book (Album) Club Week 17: Ipecac Neat by P.O.S.
  • Same actually. I was surprised to see he had an album out as recently as 2018 and a single in 2022. Glad he is still making music, was for sure something I enjoyed when I was younger. And now, but P.O.S. was a big part of my listening in ~2007 haha

Pete Rock Says ‘Chasing The Money’ Ruined Hip Hop: ‘The Bag Has Become The Problem’
  • This is a point I wish more people understood. People say rap glorifies this street stuff (and it does) and that is why there is so much street violence in some places. But art doesn't create reality, it reflects it. People make art about what they know and what they see, so of course they rap about it.

There are exceptions, dudes who didn't grow up in that life rapping about it, but that is again a reflection of their life. These are guys who were big in to Hip Hop who created art mirroring what they grew up with, which is rap about a violent life style. They are also the exception, not the rule I feel.

  • Icee Jake - Officer Down 🖕👮🏻‍♂️🔥🇺🇸
  • Pulled this dude up on Spotify because I liked this song. Song titles are on point.

EDIT: Went through his top 5 on Spotify. Dude can actually spit. Didn't like SJW with the weird high pitch whiny voice, but overall solid stuff. Not just a gimmick. Kill Your Local Racist was my favorite.

My top 60 Favorite Hip Hop Album Covers of 2023
  • Excellent choices. I miss album covers. I listen to pretty much everything on Spotify now and my phone is usually in my pocket or on a side-table so I never actually see the artwork anymore. I should make an effort to actually take a look.

  • Book (Album) Club Week 16: The Marshall Mathers LP by Eminem
  • This album was an embarrassingly large part of me getting in to Hip Hop. It wasn't my first album, that was The Eminem Show. But I was a little moody for about a year there and the edgy teen I was really identified with a lot of the depression and anger on the album. I still like Eminem now, but I mostly listen to his goofier songs (Real Slim Shady, Without Me, Lock it Up) or anything featuring Swifty McVay. Giving it a re-listen yesterday night I still really liked it, but it is weird to listen to it and not identify with it at all. And some of the lyrics made me kind of uncomfortable knowing I used to rap along with this.

Favorite songs back in the day would have been Kill You, The Way I Am and Kim. Because I was a vaguely poor teenager and I was mad about it. Looking back at it now though, I found myself really getting in to pretty much the whole album, just not identifying with any of it.

The only songs I really didn't enjoy now are Amityville and Kim. Amityville has Bizarre so we all know what went wrong there. Kim is just...too mad. I don't know why I loved that song so much as a kid, because I had a decent childhood, but looking at it now it is weird. It kind of gives me some insight on my kids I think, seeing the sort of stuff I felt "reflected me" at that age. Hormones man.

Book (Album) Club Week 14: Gift Rap by The Cross Movement
  • I was hesitant to post this album when I was trying to find something seasonal, as I usually think of Christian Rap as pretty lame. That said, I wanted to do these threads to try new stuff (and get other people to do the same) so I figured why not.

That said, this is very much Christian Rap. With the first song sporting a hook of

It's Christmas time, relax your mind and unwind, yeah

Full of peace, full of joy, I'll tell you why, yeah (2X)

    It's Jesus Christ, yeah

I was pretty sure I had made a mistake. That said, it honestly kind of grew on me. Came Down is good with something a little soulful on the hook. Then I got to the middle of the album and hit Wisemen. This song goes hard as fuck and I do not care that it is basically a religious story. This is some solid, upper tier, story telling and the beat sounds amazing in my car. Kings Speech was another highlight to me, though the beat was a little overdone? Or maybe the mix was weird, I don't know exactly what it is but something is slightly off that stops it from being on the level of *Came Down *and Wisemen

Overall, I will probably never listen to this again, but I didn't hate it. Except Wisemen, which I've actually added to my favorites list on Spotify, until Christmas is over.

Welcome to Week 14 of our Book (Album) Club! Gift Rap by The Cross Movement!

I went seasonal for this week. I know Christmas is almost a week out, but doing a Christmas album on the 26th seemed lame so what the hell.

Book (Album) Club Week 13: Unstoppable by The ReMINDers
  • Continuing the trend of last week, this is something I assume most people haven't heard. Truthfully, I wasn't sure about using it. It is a little bit R&B sometimes, a little Pop-y, a healthy bit of Rap and a little bit something else. Overall it averages out to Hip-Hop for me. Plus, I started doing this as a way to expand what I listen to and discuss some stuff we maybe haven't heard.

Personally, my favorite tracks were Dust and Bones, Down and King of the Mountain. Specifically the guitar loop used in the beat on King of the Mountain absolutely sucks me in and the horns on Dust and Bones are so fun and energetic it makes me want to dance.

Weird moment I don't know if anybody else noticed or cared about. What is up on Forever when Big Samir just like...mumbles out for a second of the song? It almost sounds like he forgot the lyrics for one or two words but you could just redo the recording right? It happens at 1:51 (link goes to a few seconds before). I don't know, I just thought it was funny.

  • [FRESH] Shaquille O'Neal & GAWNE - CHAOS
  • Shaq is back with his 6th track of 2023! This is probably the weakest track he has been on since he started rapping again unfortunately.

One thing I don't know is how he keeps ending up with these rappers I've never heard of, with the exception of the Shaq and Kobe remix of course.

  • [FRESH ALBUM] Napoleon Da Legend & Crazy DJ Bazarro - Yellow Cake
  • I've only heard a little bit of this guy but holy shit his Discography is huge. This is his 8th fucking album this year.

That said, this was good. I'm surprised he can put out something of this solid quality with the volume he is putting out. Probably helps he very clearly focuses on the lyrics side of things, though Crazy DJ Bazarro did a good job on the beats. They are solid, but they never take the focus off of the rapping. Lemons might be the only exception to that, I fucking loved that beat. So simple but fun. Favorite tracks besides that were probably Instagram Love and Truth Pill. Nejma went hard.

Dude should consider putting his own lyrics on to Genius. As of now, only 3 songs have lyrics on there currently. When I'm listening to something lyrical I really like being able to read the lyrics along with the song and not being able to do that is a bummer. That said, it just came out today so maybe he does, since every other album of his I checked on Genius, every song had the lyrics on there.

  • 6IX9INE - GUMMO
  • NGL, I actually like some of 6ix9ine's stuff from this time period. Day69 and Dummy Boy both had some absolute bangers. This, KEKE, STOOPID and Kooda all make me want to fight somebody. I know it isn't good music and I know he is a snitch and was talking about shit he wasn't doing, but I listen to Rick Ross too so fuck it.

His track Hellsing Station with ZillaKami from before he blew up actually gets regular listens from me, despite it not being on Spotify. I like most stuff Zilla does though.
