Windows 10 is the last version of Windows
  • I'm glad I have finally seen someone else who appreciates windows 8 (or at least is willing to admit it). People just lose their shit when there are any changes to the start menu, but the best start menu is to not have one at all.

Windows 8 has way better hotkeys (limit seaeching to files, programs, or applications) compared to the unified search in newer versions.

  • Interesting android launchers?
  • Niagara was an easy 5 stars and lifetime purchase, but I now have a seething hatred for apps that stick random words as a prefix; for example, "myCigna" or "Fly Delta" because it ruins alphabetical sorting. I rate them 1 star for their ridiculous naming practices, but I feel like I need to do something more drastic to communicate my anger.

  • eGPU docks?
  • I went down this path, but mini itx nucs with a GPU slot seemed to be better as long as you're not using the egpu on multiple devices; if you are, then it might be worth considering just making a PC a host and running sunshine/moonlight. While I haven't tried connecting to my host on the steamdeck, I have on my laptop and felt like it could be used for gaming

  • How to selfhost a llm?
  • I haven't looked into specific apps, but I have been wanting to try various trained models and figured just self hosting jupyterhub and getting models from hugging face would be a quick and flexible way to do it

  • Is Medicare supplemental insurance worth it? Here's what some experts think.
  • Medicare supplemental insurance coverage could help you overcome unexpected expenses.

That's literally the sales pitch for any type of insurance product. If someone were to have a risk (that couldn't be reduced or avoided) where there was a material risk of insolvency, then insurance should be considered.

  • (USA) Do supplemental cancer/critical illness policies make sense?
  • It depends on a lot of factors, but generally price and benefits. Some old cancer policies had no caps, which tended to lose insurers lots of money because health care costs have risen exponentially. Generally though, you'll be paying a premium because the insurer acquired the risk. If you could absorb the loss without it, then in general it's likely better to not purchase it.

  • What's up with all these immutable distributions? What are the benefits and disadvantages of them?
  • I agree, when I was on other distributions I would gradually customize things until something broken; then it was easier to start from scratch than to fix my mistakes. With NixOS it still gives me the ability to tinker with things, but makes it much easier than starting from scratch when I inevitably mess it up.

  • Gaming in Proxmox VM, feasible?
  • I have proxmox running on a nuc and do a GPU passthrough to a windows VM. I haven't encountered any anti cheat issues yet, but I honestly don't game near as much as I used to.
