  • They built something like this for an exhibition of Andy Warhol’s 1980s computer paintings some years ago. They wanted to show the art on Amiga 1000s like the one he used, but both the computers and their CRT monitors were too flaky to manage, so they put a Raspberry Pi running an emulator in an Amiga case. For the display, they took the case of an Amiga monitor and mounted a OLED panel behind an acrylic sheet.

  • This is what unmedicated mental illness looks like.

  • If your kick is performative contrarianism/“owning the libs”/gleefully being an asshole these days, wrapping yourself in a big ol’ Israeli flag is going to look mighty tempting.

  • I went to Hooters the other day, and it was full of dudebros with goatees and MAGA hats holding bibles and loudly going on about how Christian and un-woke they were. Some of them were even holding their bibles the right way up.

Sucks to be one of the waitresses that night, though, as your tips are going to be those fake dollar bills with a bible verse printed on them.

  • Or like an alpha particle, having low penetration power.

  • Of course, the idea that the President’s head can just explode for no reason in view of the public, and by implication, so can anyone else’s at any time, is far more existentially terrifying than any assassination plot, so, to avert mass panic and social collapse, the FBI hurriedly framed some local weirdo, and then killed him before anyone could flag that he probably had nothing to do with it, which is the only reason why everyone’s life savings still had any value afterwards.

  • …or would it be more cost-effective to just learn Russian?

  • If the 6th-century plague was called the Justinian Plague, after the ruler of the empire whose end it marked, this would be the Trumpian Plague.

  • It appears to be a FPGA-backed device with a C64 core. I wonder if it’d be capable of running cores simulating more powerful systems as well, though if the keyboard layout is just the old-school C64 one, it may be awkward to use.

  • The UK’s nuclear arsenal is still dependent on the US for maintenance, with warheads going to North Carolina periodically.

The new strategic nukes Starmer is ordering will be tied into the US infrastructure, as are the F-35s to launch them, though given the last-resort nature of nuclear weapons, their actual purpose may be to keep Trump onside politically while Britain’s everyday military capabilities integrate more closely with its European neighbours.

  • Apparently the Argentine equivalent is something like “take your hat off, you’re not in this photo”

  • “meat” is descended from a Germanic word that just meant food, which is still evident in cognates in other languages (i.e. “mad” in Danish) and archaic words like “sweetmeats”

  • The City of London is the one square mile in the centre that consists mostly of office space, at a fairly high density, and not the entirety of London. Bicycles outnumbering cars there is just common sense, and shouldn’t be remotely controversial. (Parking there would probably be a massive headache, for one.)

With other boroughs of London, it’s a lot more varied. Westminster and Chelsea, for one, is very different, with its council vetoing bike lanes the Greater London council planned to run through it, as its wealthy residents don’t want them taking road space away from their Land Rovers and Porsche Taycans or bringing the wrong kinds of people through their neighbourhoods.
