Minimum hardware for a client?
  • Sorry, I'm not sure - like I said, I'm on a Pi.

  • Minimum hardware for a client?
  • The Nvidia Shield seems to be the gold standard, but it's kind of pricey. I'm using a Raspberry Pi (2? 3?) running LibreElec with the Jellyfin plugin. It works great for video but has some issues with music playlists. You could also try a cheap Onn box from Walmart.

  • Better light outside and the patio was a mess.

  • A simple guitar stand
  • Thank you! It was made specifically for a Fender P bass, which is not particularly delicate. I have another one with a different design that I made for my acoustic, but that stand is more of a prototype made out of pine and not as impressive.
I do like the idea of moving the 'head' forward so it cradles the neck. I only just had enough stock to make this (well, without cutting into some bigger, nicer boards) so I didn't have a lot of room for features or experimentation.

  • It would be improved by some googly eyes.
    But then, what wouldn't?

  • Good call. I have some old suede slippers sitting around that I was going to use for strops - but if there's enough material I could use them for this. The bass I made it for contacts the spine at its metal neckplate, so that doesn't need cushioning, but the body does.

I made this from a long piece cherry offcut that I've had sitting around for ages. Here's a better picture of the interesting bit: https://i.imgur.com/LV0ep0a.jpeg I'm honestly not thrilled with the finish. I thought I'd sanded out all the little 'scales' the planer leaves, but many came back when I put the oil on.

[General question to the Android community] Have you given up on the audio jack, or do you still only buy devices that have it?
  • I'm pretty happy with Pixels for the moment, so it's a $5 USB-C to 1/8" dongle for me. That or the Pixel Buds I got for free as as promo with the phone. I've never had to charge and use the converter at the same time, but I believe there are cheap dongles that can do that too.

    That's what she said.

  • Jellyfin struggling to play high quality files, crashing after a few minutes.
  • If the crashes are seemingly at random when transcoding I would suspect overheating hardware. Transcoding uses more energy and produces more heat than playing directly. If it were a software issue it would either work or not.

  • How are you brewing your Aeropress?
  • If you're into Aeropress and want to experiment, check out the Aeromatic app. It has dozens of recipes and uses a timer to step you through them. You'll need a scale. It also tries to account for the grind size you get from your particular model of grinder. I'm not sure how accurate its compensation is, but it should get you in the ballpark.

  • How are you brewing your Aeropress?
  • Bloom is the grounds offgassing carbon dioxide. The darker the roast, the greater the bloom. When you're brewing in a filter or a French press you can watch the grounds bubble up and expand as the gas is released.

  • Android 15 is pulling the plug on apps built for Android Marshmallow
  • Thanks. FWIW there are a couple of apps called Tuner on F-Droid. The one by Michael Moessner seems to be better maintained.

  • I use an ancient guitar tuner app called Pitch Lab. Tiny, no ads. It's great. If they don't kill it this round it feels like it will be soon.

Can you un-smart a smart tv?
  • I've got a cable DVR and a Raspberry Pi running LibreElec plugged into it.
I've only experimented a little with gaming since I don't own a console and my PC is in another room. I had the whatever the Steam software is installed on the Pi for awhile, so I could stream games from the PC.

  • Help debugging laggy music casting to LibreElec

I'm running a new installation of the server and LibreELEC (this worked fine on my previous installs, but I decided to fix what ain't broke). I'm casting over the LAN from the server on Debian to LibreElec on a Rraspberry Pi. The problem I'm encountering now is that LibreElec will hang and show a spinner for anywhere from 15 seconds to several minutes when advancing to the next track of an album or music playlist. It only breaks when I'm casting, not when I'm playing locally through the Player. It only breaks for FLAC files, not Mp3s, so transcoding seems to have something to do with it. I've disabled playback of transcoded audio in the user's settings and restarted the server, but it didn't change anything.

Where should I be looking to figure this out?

A lesson in inflation from a 2003 Grizzly catalog

I was cleaning out an old bookshelf and came across this 2003 Grizzly catalog. Coincidentally, I'd just received a 2023 mailer. I was shocked by the increases in price.

    Some highlights: Standard 14" band saw: $375 vs. $800 Standard 6" jointer: $400 vs. $900 4-piece Bessey K-body clamp set: $150 vs. $350

I know nothing about how inflation works, so I'm not sure whether this tracks with the price of bread or whatever, but it was eye-opening.

I made a bevel gauge thingy to sight down when augering holes in chair seats

Initially I used my commercial bevel gauge, but the blade was long enough to interfere with the swing of the brace, plus it needed to be taped down for stability. This gizmo I made from scrap should solve both of those problems.

    Stool from construction lumber

This was inspired by a Rex Kruger video where he makes a stool from a single 2x4, and by Chris Schwarz's staked high stool. Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzZdFCSet48 And Lost Art Press seems to be down at the moment, but here's the link anyway: https://blog.lostartpress.com/2017/04/11/download-plans-for-the-staked-high-stool/

Looking for an Android calendar app that will sync with a Windows app like Rainlendar

I like to keep a calendar widget open on my Windows desktop since I have lots of room for it, but I usually enter events on my phone since it's always with me. Is there an app combo that will sync? I can probably self-host if need be. (I suspect this would be easier if I were running Linux on my desktop...)

Edit: I should have mentioned that I don't like the interface of the Google Calendar app on Android, and I'd prefer something third-party.
