I’m missing the joke I think..
"expired without issue" has a whole different meaning to historians/nobility/royalty:
explanation of the joke
expire: die
issue: children
and thus:
expire without issue: die childlesswhich is a problem with royalties since it means their line of succession ends.
I'm not sure I get the store manager part but I think if a member of royalty expires without issue I'd guess it means they made it to being dead without any uprisings or rebellions or coups etc.
All guess work on my part.
