Makes sense. Those corporate and office job salaries are much more expensive when our taxes don’t subsidize their pay, like we do the rest of Walmart employees. Employees don’t need to eat as much as the Waltons need to keep getting richer.
It’s not just low wages, it’s also a wildly disproportionate amount of part-timers to avoid providing benefits. They undercut local retailers in several markets, leaving towns with little other commerce, making it increasingly more difficult for their part-timers to find supplemental income. They’re a cancer on communities.
The devil will be in the details. They likely reduced hours to compensate, which they already do to avoid "pitfalls" like paying for healthcare.
Wal-Mart's pockets are deep enough that they could have started paying living wages and made an example of it. Sales probably would have gone up, too. But they didn't do that. Raising wages to a new poverty wage is helpful, but we shouldn't confuse it with any real change in status quo.
And , not to sound like I’m defending them, but when it first came out that they were helping employees apply for benefits, that was a good thing. Obviously the root cause was low pay, and they rightly deserve blame for that. However if they’re paying prevailing wages and can help employees at no additional cost, that’s a good thing. Basically, making the best of a shitty situation
Sounds like the shitty corporation I walked away from over 2 years ago without notice. Walmart is such a shitshow, it’s only held together by the few who give enough of a shit to treat employees right. Their policies are employee hostile and customer neutral in most cases…I feel for my friends that are busting ass there still.
I worked at Walmart before 2010, and witnessed how they were getting rid of 20+ yr employees that had accrued higher wages and benefits, to replace them with part-time people working for nearly minimum wage and no benefits.
The worst one I can remember is a very old man working outside in the garden center in central Alaska during winter. He was written up for having a coffee cup.
Yeah, that’s what a lot of the policy changes accomplished here as well, they got rid of quite a few old timers before reverting most changes! It was bad, as a knowledgeable staff was cut down. 😵💫
