TTC is a joke
Why does the TTC suck so much in customer service, and what's with the constant delays every single day.
Sometimes going into the office (when I'm stuck between station for 30 minutes in a non-moving train), I wonder how much better it was during covid with a full WFH mandated.
The TTC main complaint those last few years were no one is riding, but now they have ridership and they can't keep up with demand.
Chronic underfunding.
TTC is great. You should go to Durham region and try their transit system. Bonus points if you go all the way to Bowmanville and try to get anywhere by bus
I live in Mississauga and they only run the tiny buses on weekends despite the demand clearly being there, since they get packed. And if you want to travel on a Sunday? Forget it. Buses every half hour only and they're always full
Not a great comparison. Toronto is comparable to Berlin, and should have similar level of public transit service.
Yeah, the TTC isn't perfect. But you really appreciate how acceptable it is when you move somewhere else. Living in Ottawa and Dublin made the TTC look like a well oiled machine.
And as stated elsewhere most of the TTC's problems can be pretty directly related to underfunding. Sure, they could probably run a bit more efficiently but that isn't the core problem. With more budget they could do a lot more. Get people off the road, roads moving faster as a result, lower overall transportation costs in the city (roads are more expensive than TTC to maintain) and result in a healthier population (less pollution, noise and encourage more walking around).
TTC can be very frustrating at times. 30 minutes stuck on a train between stations is dreadful. I hope you never experience that again and future commutes are better
Take The Car
I remember waiting at Spadina years ago and heard someone scream that phrase ... and I think for the next year of work I biked. It was like Inception with that phrase. lol.
I moved to London UK afterwards and was amazed at how transit wasn't just so much better but it was the primary mode of transport. A lot of people hate the tube but I just can't be mad at it after living in Toronto. London has loads more people living in than Toronto for sure, but Toronto was just so bad. I often made a joke about how many transit lines we've added in London in a few years and that living in Toronto for the past five, we've actually removed one (Kennedy?).
Not everyone has access or shares the same situation. Just because you may do one thing does not nessesary mean everyone else can do the same. There may be reasons I can't take a car. These can be personal preferences or physical barriers.
For example I could be blind, or maybe I suffer extreme hand eye coordination issues. It could be that I can't afford a car, or the financial expense associated with it. Or maybe I don't want to be apart of the environmental expenses owning a car.
And who knows maybe I cycle or take a scooter, but use transite as a connection to cut down travel time.
