As a second generation Latino I believe it has to do with assimilation. Most of my family works in construction in some way (including myself) and they're usually uneducated and easily manipulated. It's no surprise the right targets blue collar workers and bombards them with anti-social program rhetoric about "your tax dollars being used to fund the lazy" bullshit. Also, and I hate to say this, blacks and Latinos didn't mix historically. The BLM stuff moved a lot of minorities (Asians and others) away from the left and I'm still embarrassed by it - another example being that Latinos and whites get along in California jails and don't associate with blacks. Shits fucking retarded.
I can apply one of my favorite quotes to this situation: "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." - LBJ... but instead use brown instead of white 🤣

It has to do with minorities coming to America, finding some success and wondering why the black community can’t seem to break through. This line of rationale is over simplifying the long standing history of racism and oppression that has kept minorities down for generations in the US. All minorities in the US face an uphill battle in a sense, but folks who migrated more recently haven’t experienced it for generations (esp like the pre-civil rights gens did). The playing field is also improving, although still has a way to go, and more recent immigrants are in a better place to possibly find some degree of success. This makes some people, who don’t take the history into account, ask, “I did it, why can’t you?” …which is the republican mentality
I'll leave a few examples of what I mean but growing up in the 90's, it was cool to be racist against blacks. My family was no exception and it was expected of us to not get along. This wasn't an isolated incident as the whole world of "pick-me-minorites" (including other black people) was growing. The system made us enemies and with it came a culture of acceptable racism. So it's no surprise that these older generations still harbored some misguided hatred when the BLM protests/riots happened. My family, as much as I love them, are completely stupid and immature when it comes to racial issues. My own sweet mother is afraid of black people and is oftentimes on the giving end of some wild racist quotes. But her uncle was killed by a black man over a pair of shoes so I guess it's "justified?" Obviously not.
So it could be a case of underlying racism that pushed them over the edge. The BLM movement was viewed negatively and as "typical behavior and patterns of violence of their kind" even though the overwhelming majority was peaceful. So it pushed the center to the right the right even further.

Many Asians sadly fall victim to believing in the model minority myth, that Asians are somehow not like other immigrants because they "assimilated" in spite of racism against them without the chaotic and disruptive protests. In truth, the Asian model minority myth was and is a racial wedge used to push Asians against others, and itself perpetuates many harmful stereotypes. Basically, BLM had the attitude of "if you're not with us, you're a racist." And that was just way too extreme. Many people, including Latinos, just didn't care, or didn't want to get involved. When BLM started looting and burning down things in their neighborhoods, they became more angry and didn't care even more. However, they were lumped together with everyone else as "racists" or "bigots" if they didn't want to march hand in hand with blacks.
I'm 2nd generation and I disagree. My family tends to vote Republican because of their strong Catholic beliefs. My grandparents are good people, they've lived here for almost their entire lives (came from Mexico when they were young) and have always voted Republican because they believe the Republicans do more to protect religion. They're not "uneducated" or "easily manipulated." They simply think that the Left wants to take away things they have always felt very strong about, which is family and religion.
I remember the Latino support in 2016 surprising a lot of people and it had to be explained to people that:
a) "Latino" isn't a monolithic voting block and:
b) Cubans can hate Mexicans as much as white Republicans do.
Republicans are also more anti-Castro-regime than democrats, so that's another way you can slice it.

The right intentionally tries to say Democrats are socialist, exactly like the socialists that you fled from in Cuba, etc. It's amazing that it works, but it does.
Latino comminities in general are very conservative due to cultural roots and emphasis on family structure and traditions around it. While its admiral traits and aspects of their culture, also makes them vulnerable to any smooth talking snake saying the leftists are coming to break up your families and force your grandkids to be gay. Combine that with a very religious background for most and it just goes to show how overtly damn racisit the right is that Latinos don't make a massive portion of their base. Its everythint the right wants for voters but they have the wrong skin color for their other core groups to tolerate enmasse.
Most latinos also come from political and economic realities that are a wet dream for conservatives (free ride for the rich, classist system, systemic racism, shameless corruption, etc.) They support the thing they ran from because they think they're 'superior' to those behind them.

Being Latin American doesn’t automatically mean you got indigenous or African ancestry.
It also doesn't preclude them from being white supremacists, just ask Enrique Tarrio.

Latinos have always been relatively conservative... but more and more Latinos are coming from deeply religious backgrounds.

I think what latinos see is Biden is just what Trump would be like if he checked first with the courts before doing anti-Latino stuff. Biden needs to do PRO-latino stuff, not just try to stop anti-latino stuff.
The funding that was already appropriated for the wall? You want Biden to go full dictator and change how previously allocated funds are spent? Really? That doesn’t seem like a bad precedent to you?
If funds are allocated to an executive controlled department, he can have a say on how they are spent, as long as the funding purpose wasn't stipulated by congress. If prior executive controlled funding decisions were set in stone, Trump could have stipulated contruction of a golden statue of Biden holding a sign saying "I stole the election" on his last day and Biden would be powerless to stop the contruction.
Because no one likes to assume the the color of their skin or the language they speak means more than what they believe. Democrats are arrogant.
On the other hand, Republicans might actually put people against a wall for the color of their skin or the language they speak. But no one likes being taken for granted.

Well. Our options are the other option. Not ideal, but at least they're really excited to see brown and black people give cover to white supremacy. Democrats aren't excited about brown and black support--they assume they deserve it.

Latinos aren't a monolith. They don't vote like a monolith. The article gets close to realizing that, but falls short. At the end of the day Latinos vote R for the same reason White people do.

Latinos, Hispanics, Latinx, whatever liberals decide to call them, are not necessarily foreign to the soil of the US. Latinos been in the US since before the US expansion toward the West. They existed inside Texas when it was a republic. The Hispanos, that is what they call themselves of the American Southwest, are not Mexican, they have been around during the days of Spaniards. Do you really expect them to identify with a country for which they have no ancestral ties to? Furthermore, Mexican isn't a race. Mexico is a country where you have Mexican Jews, Mexican sub-Saharan Africans, Asian-Mexicans., and Amerindians.

Some points the author gets mostly right: Yes, an invisible caste system does exist in a lot of Latin America, but not ALL of Latin America. Cubans and Dominicans are racially integrated while at the same time Dominicans are nationalist, and even pan-latin. You can't blame the continued existence of a caste system on white folks. You can't blame racial-ethnic tensions in South America between the Amerindians and mestizos on white folks, either. There are no white folks teaching Bolivians to be prejudice against each other.

Hispanics may not like a country like Mexico, not because they're racist; they genuinely think the country sucks. That is rational. There is good nationalism and there is bad nationalism. Good nationalism seeks to improve the quality of the nation in economic well-being, or happiness, and security, through achievement. Bad nationalism is tribalism, and you will find a lot of that in Latin America as well. That is irrational because you imagine some special quality of being a national, but you can't quite figure out what. It is an issue of substance.

What about the politics of Latinos? They do they like the US because it is a country of laws, or do you expect them to look onto a lawless country more favorably? Migrants vote with their feet.
What motherjones wants is to imagine is ourselves as communist, where we ignore our differences and assume we are all equal or the same. It's not that everything is about race, as much as it is that race does exist, and is something a great many people pay attention to. Wanting to ignore this and pretend nobody does and nobody should talk about it is disingenuous and sneaky.

I'm half Mexican. Our whole lives, we're told we MUST vote Democrat because we're "minorities." Growing up in Southern California, I remember, literally, being taught that we were NOT good enough to be Republicans. "Democrats are the poor people, Republicans are the rich people..." I remember my 6th grade teacher telling me this. As I got older and started thinking for myself, I realized that I can vote any way I want. It's the Democrats that told me I couldn't. I think more and more Latinos are starting to realize that they CAN vote Republican, and that they ARE good enough...many Latinos have very conservative views (due to Catholicism) yet, they were told they can't vote Republican...

There's a conservative Latino in my family who married a white karen, he's always bashing other Latinos. It doesn't matter what color their skin is, rightwing Republicans act the same in my experience.

I'm half Mexican half white... growing up, the only racism I ever experienced was by other Mexicans at my schools because they were farm workers, poor, and saw me as a "half breed" wannabe. My parents didn't work in the fields, and we lived in a nice side of town (this was when California was bussing in kids from other areas into poorer areas...). My dad busted his ass, went to trade school and got a good job when we were kids, same with my mother. However, I was picked on for looking white and having a white mother. At my schools, all our teachers would talk about how wonderful Democrats were, while constantly bashing Republican leaders. My experience is much more different than what the democrats would have you believe.
