Hey is 2001 : space oddyssey still worth watching ?
I know it set some sifi benchmarks and introduced ideas , concepts when it was released . But is it worth watching now as we have more films better or not with same concepts ? Does it still hold up ? Does it have any plot holes ? Is the story good ? How is the pacing ? What about the characters are they fleshed out ? All in all a spoiler free review or the answer to these questions will be appreciated .
EDIT : How does the sequels hold up and can 2001 stand alone ?
2001 will never not hold up; the story isn't one that's tied to an era or a fad - it's the story of evolution and struggle; it's about wonderment and hubris and drive. The characters aren't even really that important, because the story isn't about them- they're just in it.
Don't forget some of the best cinematography of all time paired with fantastic classical music that has you riveted to the screen even watching a space station slowly rotate. Also the incredible mid-century modern conception of future fashion, design, and technology
Look I'll just say that I hadn't seen it until just about a year ago, had been spoiled of most of the plot and many iconic scenes, and it still became possibly my favorite movie of all time.
That movie has held up unthinkably well in every regard, even the effects are still superb. It's a masterpiece and you very much should watch it.
If you are cuious and have easy access to a copy, I would give it a watch. Its paced like an older film, its allowed to go quiet and even silent at times. its director is famous for being really good.
if you're have a Goodwill equivlant or movie store and have a DVD / BluRay player, you can get a cheap copy with luck and patience.
As with every "is it worth watching question" I'm going to say "yes" it's time you formed your own opinions about stuff. Everything is worth a punt whilst you figure out what's worth it or not.
To answer your question properly though. Yeah. It really is. It's a keystone of modern sci-fi. It's a film directed by a superb director at the hight of his ambition. It's based on a legendary sci-fi text. It pioneered special fx work. It's also got some great acting, a wonderful sound score and set design that firmy plants it in retro futurism territory.
I do find it weird that you have to ask though. I'd be much more interested in hearing from you after you've seen it. Tell us what you think, rather than the other way round.
It is a classic, meaning it is full of iconic music and scenes, but it is also very old and slow.
Almost all the well-known space music is from that movie.
But it is from a different age where scenes just take much longer than what we are used to.
I enjoyed that movie recently for the first time and it was fun to hear the iconic sounds that have been referenced so many times in other movies. But I doubt I will watch the movie again as it was a bit of a chore to get through. Still glad I did though.
