Steam adds "Dwarf" as a tag
Steam adds "Dwarf" as a tag
Steam is the ultimate destination for playing, discussing, and creating games.
They went from, ‘That’s stupid. We're not doing that," to "That’s stupid but okay," so fucking fast.
179 0 Reply"That's stupid but okay" is a very valve thing.
113 0 ReplyI've played TF2.
Their view of "what? No that's silly" struck me as very odd.

I get it from their perspective, featuring dwarves in a game doesn’t really help others find similar games in the same vein. On the other hand, they have a tag for pirates and Black Flag differs quite a bit from puzzle pirates.
43 0 ReplyAlright, I'll ask the obvious follow-up question: do they have a tag for ninjas?

Because the team behind Deep Rock Galactic asked their community to start using it to show demand. And apparently they listened.
26 0 ReplyAnd Dwarf Fortress

It was a fake "controversy" to draw sales and engagement.
22 1 ReplyI mean, that's how it should be.
If a mass amount of people want a trivial thing that doesn't harm anybody else, even if you disagree with it, why not?
11 2 ReplyThis is the original meaning of the phrase "the customer is always right". It's been warped by "karen" types into a weapon used against minimum wage workers, but what it's supposed to mean is "the customer is always right in matters of taste". Meaning if a company doesn't want to do something because they think it's dumb but the demographic says "I like that" then the customer is right, and the company should do it. I know the dwarf tag isn't about money, but it's still a matter of listening to the customers on the platform.
2 0 ReplyDisagree but only on a technicality.
Ideally, they could skip the first part.

Lmao that happened so fast. Deep rock galactic and dwarf fortress teaming up really worked!
95 0 ReplySteam gets free publicity (not that it's really needed) and it all cost them was 5 letters.

See? Valve does listen to its customers.
63 0 ReplyI for one went and marked 100% of my dwarf games with the custom title yesterday.
Glad to see that now that I helped, they're gunna change it
56 2 ReplyHow many dwarf games could there really be?
Is there an entire genre that I'm unaware of?
21 0 ReplyMore than you would think...
The biggest two that pop into my head are Deep Rock Galactic, and Dwarf Fortress.

Strike the earth
41 0 ReplySo basically this means there is a significant demographic of gamers that will play a game largely because it features dwarves?
Im sorry, I missed all the fuss about this.
I guess look forward to Dwarf Cart Racing and Dwarf Chess and Dwarf MilSim Tac Squad.
I was gonna say A Dwarf And His Horse but uh... well maybe it would work with dwarf horses. Thats probably got some appeal.
36 2 ReplyA Dwarf MilSim Tac Squad would be nice
15 0 ReplySome Warhammer dev is taking this to a meeting right now.
6 0 ReplyIt would simplify the control scheme somewhat as there would basically be no point whatsoever for a dwarf to crouch. Prone might make sense?
Can dwarves lean left and right around corners without going off balance and just falling over?
4 0 ReplyThe idea of a a Ready or Not styled game with the comedy and tone of Deep Rock would be killer.

A dwarf and his horse would rapidly become a dwarf and his lifetime supply of jerky
7 0 ReplyI hope to god you are not implying that the dwarf strips meat off the horse when its so cold the horse cannot feel it, ala valley forge us army survival tactics.

I would lol
3 0 ReplyAbsolutely. I love dwarves

22 2 ReplyLOL right? Like.. neat. Cool that it finally got this random tag... Seems like a slow news cycle for gaming.

OOTL: Can I get a summary?
11 0 Replythey rejected the request of Deep Rock Galatic and Dwarf Fortress to add a dwarf tag, the two teamed up on a co marketing campaign to get the decision reversed, Steam acquiesced.
36 0 ReplyWhat next? A tag for elves? A tag for tieflings? What a slippery slope!

I think they did it because "let's play along" but it's still not a smart move. I guess they had to go along.
