This is a Ford F650 Truck and when I stepped out of my Youtube Bubble I realized, it was marketed as the "biggest, baddest Truck on the road" for the everyday American. Are you guys serious?! Is the end goal really to drive a Monster Truck to McDs to get a McFlurry? Americas bloodiest wars have been fought in the middle east to secure oil, bombing nations to rubble. And all, for this bullshit? The excess, waste and decadence is mind boggling to me and people on Reddit seriously justifying this by "you know dude I'm 6,4ft. I don't fit in any other vehicle" makes me go up the wall.
If you want to be even more outraged by American stupidity, look up “rolling coal”. In short, morons buy large trucks like this and purposely detune their emissions systems to run poorly, decreasing fuel efficiency and spewing soot laden exhaust. The only purpose to do this is to piss off liberals, apparently.
This is a really braindead and disingenuous take. The F650 is a commercial vehicle. Attempting to pretend that "Americans" drive these is moronic, because the number of private citizens who drive one of these as a personal vehicle is probably in the triple digits in a country with a population of 332,000,000.
I know it's fasionable to farm for upvotes these days by blaring AMERICANS BIG TRUCKS BAD. But no one is "driving these to McD's to get a McFlurry." Very, very few people own one of these just to be "decadent."

On the very outside edge of the graph, there are probably a few outliers who own one of these to tow something enormous: A big horse trailer or a box trailer with their airplane in it or something. I have never seen one of these on the road that wasn't an actual commercial vehicle like a tow truck or similar.
The problem with obviously ridiculous whinging like this is that it dilutes the actual useful message, which is that America's transportation infrastructure is fucked up, and our reliance on fossil fuels (not just trucks) is Too Damn High.
Ok, see to put thin in context a little bit, this truck is not for, nor is it even marketed towards regular people. This is a modular truck, so this is going to be converted into ambulances, tow trucks, bucket trucks, etc. This one does have a bed on it, but they had to get one from like an F-350 and modify it to get it to fit. And while you can buy this truck, it's not really a thing on roads here.

I’m not defending the truck or America but I don’t think that one is common outside of industry. I live in the South and have never seen one. F150’s are very common, you see F250’s here and there, and F350s are basically exclusively work trucks. I didn’t even know it went up to F650 (the F750 apparently exists but seems like it’s really only for industry).
Ford’s web site has them “starting at” $80k but without a bed or any consumer features. It seems like they’re more the base for order things like fleets of tow trucks or dump trucks. I’m sure a mega rich person can buy one but it’s probably a weird custom thing that costs $200,000 and is missing whatever creature comforts go into vanity trucks.

i live in the south, you never see these things in real life, and i'm deep in truck country.
these things are comically impractical. like you couldn't pull into a parking garage, or much of anything with this. you'd be parking and walking to wherever you were trying to go. they would likely hit the limit sign and overhang on a typical McDonald's.

Lol. I think some Europeans may have some... misguided beliefs on American culture. I live in Tennessee, a state stereotypically associated with these kinds of trucks. I have never seen a truck this large on the roads (at least not one that wasn't clearly for commercial use). You'll occasionally see an F250, but even those aren't too common.

Nowadays normal people are driving cars meant for psychopaths. Real psychopaths have to one up this. It is just natural.
I read this article recently, which describes this sort of ridiculous behavior perfectly. "Oh, we can't drive big gas guzzling children killing trucks? I'm gonna buy an even bigger one! How about that?" These people are behaving like children being taught they can't have everything, and they're having a big tantrum about it.
These exist but are very rare. This is a commercial truck meant for things like small dump beds, bucket trucks, etc. There are a few shops that specialize in doing these types of custom builds for people who have way too much money and too little sense. There is a shop in my town that does this sort of work and they have something like this as a promotional tool but kost if their customers don't get anything this extreme.
This is a modified commercial truck. It's designed for heavy work, large construction, towing ridiculously large things, etc. Someone did custom work on it to make it look like a consumer vehicle.
This is aftermarket. The F650 is a Commercial truck which is sold by Ford incomplete (without a bed). You'll frequently see them built out for specific purposes like dump truck, tow truck, specific hauling, etc. (see Ford's page for some examples). I believe in most jurisdictions you need a commercial air-brakes driver's license to be able to drive one of these.
I promise, you're unlikely to see an "everyday American" driving an F650. There might be a literal handful of exceptions out there somewhere, but most people will only ever see this in industrial applications. Most often you'll see a 650 outfitted with a cargo bed or a (extra large, for towing big rigs) wrecker setup, or something large, robust, and industrial like that. This is just a publicity/marketing stunt. 99% of Ford F350 and larger trucks you will ever see will be industrial/cargo/heavy equipment moving/etc. industrial job vehicles. It's even relatively common to buy the truck, and buy the bed you need for your industrial application, custom. This is not something you'll see set up like a pickup truck in very many American driveways. The handful of those exceptions are the same sort of enthusiast niche that will hot rod customize to a ridiculous impractical degree a regular car, just to say they can. Very small group.

When I rented a 26' U-Haul it was an F-650. That's pretty much the only time I've seen one.
Most people in these comments act like we just have car lots full of trucks just like this ready to be sold to the regular consumer. Just a couple searches on the internet or simply reading other comments in this thread will tell you that we don’t. To get something like this you’re paying well over $100,000 and you would have to specifically ask to have this set up. That’s if they even do it at a factory. This could very well be aftermarket. Trucks this size are meant for commercial use and are purchased with just the cab and open frame. After the purchase they would be delivered to whatever facility needed to outfit it for its specific purpose whether it’s a tow truck, electric service, waste management. Etc. Just because 1 douchebag decided to kit one these out as an oversized pickup and some YouTuber decides to market like “biggest and baddest” is a good thing doesn’t mean that everyone here is doing it. Like calm down. Most of us don’t like it either.
Look at it this way. Technically this isn’t the biggest and baddest for any everyday citizen of any nation. You could have a semi with a sleeper cab. Something like that would be massive for the everyday person, and for everyday use it wouldn’t be bad, it would be horrendous!

The Ford F650 is part of a platform that, as you can see, is heavy-duty enough that you can put a proper dump bed on the back. It can be built many different ways, and the way that Ford will sell the vast majority of these trucks is that it will sell a cab and empty frame to another company, who will then build something else around it, some sort of heavy-duty thing that will see quite a lot of professional use, probably off-road more often than not. The massive ground clearance will look a lot more appropriate when this truck ends up where it belongs.
These things end up with buckets on the back, and used for powerline maintenance, or the entire back end becomes a steel locker for a bunch of welding and fabrication equipment. Once it is specced out properly, the size of it will make sense.
This model of truck is large and serious enough to also come with a proper, grown up diesel engine comparable to other heavy equipment engines in both weight and general durability. That it is the true purpose of the Ford F650, it is big and heavy enough to accept a respectable diesel engine for a proper dump truck, not the little baby diesels in the F150s, but one that is probably not available in anything smaller, a diesel that will actually last for 1 million km if maintained. It won't even be a Ford engine, it will probably be a Cummins or another brand common in American heavy equipment, not passenger cars.
I am not trying to flex when I say this thing isn't a toy. The transmission for it probably isn't available in any other Ford pickup. They're too small. Most of them will not spend a lot of time in the commuter lane, they'll be on job sites all day. Even Americans don't really drive the truck in the picture. The thing is in a class by itself.
Ford may as well sell a civilian version in case any Texas oil boys want the biggest truck on the block, but that just means adding a pickup truck bed to it, which goes with the rest of the cab in front. It certainly looks ridiculous. But somebody will want it to pull a really long horse trailer, so the bed back there is just a place to install a fifth wheel, the attachment point for a goose neck trailer. The owner will probably be somebody with a successful contracting business, somebody who can justify this thing as a proper business expense, since their other vehicle will say Caterpillar on it somewhere and has to also be towed on a trailer from job site to job site.
That is what the Ford F650 is for, and can do, it tows other heavy equipment around on public roads. It looks a lot less ridiculous with a skid loader and heavy trailer behind it. Park it next to a piece of proper construction equipment and it looks like a baby toy. It is small by heavy equipment standards, so that makes it maneuverable on construction sites.
The size of the current F150, the truck meant for average office workers to buy, that is the problem. It is unreasonable and no longer even fit for its original utility purpose. The modern F150 is too big, too expensive, and too cushy to be a farm truck, or a work truck on a job site. It is extremely common, overtall, and perfect for killing pedestrians.
The size of this thing, the F650, is not actually an issue. It is huge for defensible reasons, and it just looks crazy when you try to spec it out for civilian pickup use, because that's fuckng crazy. It looks striking in the marketing material, for sure. We're discussing the beast right now. Victory achieved for the marketing guy who insisted on offering this spec. Now even the Germans are aware of the truck.
But, oops, I can only assume that this entire "fuck cars" community is just the online version of those Just Stop Oil pricks, it's all the idea of some PR firm who want to make public transport advocacy look like a position for shitty assholes with no respect for the needs of others. Sales numbers are hard to find, but in 2021, they expected to see about 15,000 F-650s and F-750s combined. That's worldwide sales. The 750s are mostly box trucks and dump trucks. While there may be a few pimped out like the 650 here, sold to people that are compensating for certain size problems elsewhere, the vast...vast majority of the made are for business.
Lol, I'm 6'4" and I drive an old Japanese import, comfortably. It's an 89 supra, so it's not as good on gas as it could be. But certainly better than many other options. But I just love it. Hard to part with it.
And also literally every other vehicle I have gotten into was at least viable if not also comfortable, except for one, I tried to sit in a miata. I can safely say those are not intended for people my size. But I'm not particularly overweight. Certainly could be in better shape than I am, but most people who look at me would assume I weigh significantly less, just because height adds more weight than morst people account for. I don't know if being overweight would make a big difference in which cars are comfortable for my height. The only way I can really see it is if it cuts more into leg room.
Either way, it's definitely not "hard to find" cars a person my size can fit into.

Drove one once, air brakes so can't legally be driven by everyone (where I live anyway). The owner got it to bring fuel to his machinery, he got it used and it was cheaper than a similarly equipped F350...

Almost nobody can actually have one of these. Also, maybe my unpopular opinion, it is possible to have hobbies involving cars (or motorsports) and also be opposed to the foundational reliance in them for day to day use -- granted this is likely not the case with someone who buys a super duty truck just for glam points.

American here, I don't think I've ever seen someone who uses something like this as their daily driver (I do not live in Texas. No one knows what goes down in Texas). I believe this vehicle is mainly for companies, and I believe (I could be wrong) that consumers can only go up to the F-250 or the F-350. Every time I've seen an F-650, it's been a company vehicle. They're also not very common here as well (at least where I am), and I believe I've only seen like 2 F-650s in my entire life. While that may be two too many for this community, I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen more. Apparently Ford has an F-750 as well, but I've only see one of them before, and it was very surprising. The F650 is pretty much the last thing you buy before you need a proper semi/tractor truck. I have seen a few, and known someone with one; and they routinely use it for cash hauls to make a living. Paying LTL (less than truck load) rates are very expensive and slow compared to hiring a contractor to haul something you need in a timely manner. The guy I knew that owned one used it to make a living hauling farm and construction equipment long distances.
Most F650's that are produced will not have a bed, because they either get fitted with a flatbed or a cargo box.

- I've never seen a consumer truck this large in person. Only special, heavy equipment, for farming, military, or construction is this large. It's a novelty toy, as others have said, for wealthy people with dumb luck. I don't know trucks well enough to say what models I see, but I do see some big trucks. This is a bit of a charicature. In fact this is a commercial truck that someone--seems like it's an option from Ford directly, or an independent custom shop--specced out as a luxury four-door pickup. Normally, this engine and chassis is specced out as a cab and frame, and sold out to commercial custom shops that are turning them into fire engines or freezer trucks, utility trucks, and what not. In Europe though, I think even the freezer trucks and fireengines are much smaller. One difference being that when the automobile came to our parts of the world, Americans had much more space, and I think it turn our common law of public ways and easements adapted to larger vehicles; like at some point the law had to recognize property rights granted for the purpose of transport (virtually everywhere you go) of people and goods had to adapt to the mode of transport: horse teams, to truck drivers (teamsters).
I look at that and see a Lamborghini. An overpriced, impractical, toy/hobby/show vehicle. There's nothing wrong with them existing.

Apparently, the guy that owned it, was climbing in to leave and fell backward out of it. Spent 2-3 months in the hospital recovering. No one needs one of these things

They're built on the biggest version of that truck, which normally requires a special license. This one however, you can get with a normal class C license.
American here. F650s are absolutely NOT marketed as consumer vehicles. The picture is a custom build, as far as I can tell. They don't come like that from Ford. I've never seen a f650 on the road that wasn't some kind of work truck or utility vehicle.
A quick look at Ford's website tells me most (maybe all) f650s have a bare frame in the back with the expectation that whatever person (or more likely a company) who buy it will outfit it with whatever equipment they need.
The biggest trucks I see driven by commuters with any regularity are f250s, which are definitely still ridiculously large, but it's not quite as silly as you seem to think.
And on McDonald's, I'm fairly certain that a f650 would be incapable of going through some drive-thrus because they're too tall. Really very few people own trucks like the one in the photo. I've never seen one, and I live in the southeast where pickup trucks are obnoxiously popular.
As a German I dont get trucks at all.
If you need a lot of loading capacity, a van is almost always the better choice.
Especially when you sometimes need to carry a lot of people and other times a lot of material. You can just take the back seats out or fold them down, now you can use the same space for two different purposes.
And you can even install shelves for your tools and material, they are also protected from the weather and some thieves.
I have a Nissan NV-200 (which is almost too small to be considered a van) and I can seat 7 people or I can remove/fold away the backseats and I can suddenly carry more than I almost always need.
It is Diesel and right now I get 7l/100km (33mpg) even though I dont have a fuel saving driving style. I did some experiments when I was on vacation, if I drive a constant 120kph (74mph) I get 6l/100km (39mpg). If I drive around 90kph (56mph) behind commercial trucks, not hugging them but following them so I dont hold up traffic anymore than they do, I get between 4 and 5l/100km (59-47mpg).
Try doing that with a truck, especially when its got a big V8 engine that basically just burns fuel for nothing.

On this lemmy, most of the top posts are people specifically refuting the bait. When you see Mad Max Scenes from the original Film of the 80s. It's so laughable. If ever some kind of civil war scenario breaks out in the Us. No, that is its mind.
