BS. Collaboration does not require people to physically occupy the same space. It does require communication though, which happens quite easily thanks to the internet.

This is just an excuse to get rid of people or to fill empty offices to appease money hungry property owners.
- If physical contact was necessary for collaboration, then nearly every foss project would fail.
  
  The important distinction there is those people want to work together to make a thing they want to make. Those people tend to also be extremely comfortable with digital communication as their primary method of interaction. Of course they can make it work.
  
  I'm not saying people can't cooperate remotely just as well, if not better than in person, or that any employer should be forcing anyone back to the office without hard evidence the remote work is fucking things up, but we know for a fact human behavior tends to change when interacting with people in person versus digitally, and it should be acknowledged that sometimes that means remote work is not always going to work as well in every case.
- People leaving due to return to office on top of the layoffs and using expensive commercial real estate with those who stay is all icing as far as they are concerned.

However, forcing employees back has led to walkouts and petitions against the move. It's no surprise, given that some people say they'd rather quit or take a pay cut than return to the office.

It's true, I'd tell them to shove it if my company tried to force me back into the office.
I had to work with Broadcom back when they acquired CA Technologies and I was a sysadmin for a CA system at my company. From stem to stern, that company suuuuuucks.
