What is up with “Estados Unidos” being “EE. UU.”? Is this like that weird rule in Latin anatomy?
Yes, I think it comes from the same rule. Estados Unidos is plural, so the abbreviation is doubled single letters. Sometimes English does this too (pp. for pages or §§ for sections). There are other examples in Spanish too.
I don't know what its origin is (maybe a native speaker can weigh in) but it's standard.

Some are, but avocados are native to the region, and it's close to the US for cheap shipping.

Tbh the rest of the world need to have a say on US elections too, like maybe allow europeans to vote too ?
