Hi all. I've seen a few drives described as recertified like the one I have linked. Can anyone tell me what this means? Is it the same as used/refurbished? They all seem to be much cheaper than new so are catching the eye but I'm not sure if it would be a good idea.
Buy from a reputable reseller. Serverpartdeals has gained respect in this community.
Refurbished = used = recertified. They don't do anything to them except maybe scan for bad sectors and sometimes reset the SMART attributes. But Serverpartdeals provides a 2 year warranty for most of their drives as far as I'm aware. Warranty is through them though not direct from the drive manufacturer.
While I personally haven't had the best luck with recertified drives, Serverpartdeals has always taken care of me.
Last week a 16tb Exo recertified died on me and was literally three weeks away from falling out of their 2 year warranty and they RMA'd it no questions asked.
Recertified drives are the ones which were in use and were returned due to issues. They usually get fixed if required and sold again. They usually have the additional limited warranty, which makes them a good option for lower cost.
Direct from the website: > Shop for drives that are certified once again by the manufacturer to work like new. Factory ReCertified drives are cost-effective alternatives compared to factory-sealed new counter parts. Additionally, unlike in mass production, the re-certification process involves closer attention to the overall operation of the hardware so that the re-certification will not have to happen a 2nd time.
