I'm a professional film and TV editor. In between jobs, I recut the Kenobi show from a weak 6-hour miniseries to a strong 2-hour movie (including full sound & score remixing via split-audio I managed to get).
If Mega is giving you download problems, consider installing jdownloader here. It's a really incredible downloader program that you'll probably wanna keep regardless.
My goal for this redux was to create a tight, entertaining adventure story from the original assets.
Unlike the Patterson cut, or other fan-edits, I did not add any external assets (with one tiny exception that I'm sure you'll all notice, ha). Adding external assets from other films and shows (or original VFX) tends to break visual unity, and in my opinion is a glaringly obvious addition. The work by other fan-edits is very impressive, but would not fit with the goal of this project.
The Boonta Eve Redux is comprised of the original show itself, but pared-down, shaped, and made strong.
That said, it's important to note that no amount of re-editing can fix fundamental story problems. In my opinion, the entire existence of Kenobi is a rather unfortunate misadventure, driven almost wholly by Disney wanting to push content for content's sake. I feel strongly that having Kenobi and Vader encounter each other between RotS and ANH is, for many reasons, a critical mistake; likewise, having Kenobi and Leia encounter each other is almost as bad.
However, this re-edit addresses some of the most glaring oversights and mistakes of the original show, while highlighting its few true successes. Ultimately, I feel that it's a major improvement.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the cut. Feel free to share, create torrents, etc.
Thanks for watching!
UPDATE: I've uploaded a more-compressed (but visually great) version of the Boonta Eve cut to the MEGA folder. It's just under 5gb and should download much more easily. I'm building a torrent encode currently and will link to that within the next day.
I did not include pixeljoker's VFX - when I began this edit I set a limitation on myself to see if I could extract the story only from the original assets. I cheated once - which I'm sure everyone will notice, ha - but otherwise, this edit includes only materials that actually aired.
Thanks so much! Also, in case I'm mistaken, I believe there actually is a way to save posts, or at least there appears to be one for me. Do you see a Star button on the post? That saves posts for me, not sure if that's a feature on all lemmy instances
Wow, that was much better. Really cut down the bloat and kept the pace up. I particularly liked how you handled the forest chase scene with Leia's kidnappers.
spoiler
Bummer ending to the 3rd Sister's story arc though. :(
Thanks for the tip, that app works great. I've long been annoyed with websites that throw up arbitrary download limits and such, and this works like a charm.
Aww damn, I literally just found out about then stood up a docker container with JDownloader-2 today. Great to know that it works for Mega, because I refuse to install that app.
Loved it and thank you very much for sharing your hard work! Technically a smooth edit all the way through. My only nitpick out of the whole thing is a content one. The scene where Leia runs/plays in the forrest (12:50), felt very interruptive to the solemness of what's going on Tatooine. Otherwise this is a fantastic fan edit and hope to see more of your work!!!
This does feel like a real improvement. Nicely done! In the unlikely event I'm introducing someone new to Star Wars in the future, I'll be sure to point them at this edit instead of the whole series.
One thing that's probably unavoidable given the source material but bugged me a bit is that because each of the original episodes had a climax, the edit doesn't have a story structure where the tension builds up steadily to a peak; it kind of alternates between hitting the gas and hitting the brakes.
Also, minor nitpick: the miniseries was 6 episodes, but some of them were short so the runtime was more like 4.5 hours.
Just started watching this. It's very impressive. I never actually watched the TV show - I've only another 2hr edit to compare this with, and so far, it's noticeably better than that one.
@tymon@lemm.ee is the audio supposed to be mixed in Stereo or Mono? I see that there is a Stereo track but both tracks are identical (no Stereo separation). Thanks for making this! This fixes the one main complaint that I had with the series!
I'm sorry I tried Mega and it had me create an account and now wants me to subscribe with $12/month to download and jdownloader is rate limited "509 Bandwidth" can you please upload it somewhere else? Is this spam just to sign up for Mega?
Do you actually think I'd go to all the unpaid labor of editing a mediocre show for the sole benefit of getting a few people on Lemmy to be frustrated enough with MEGA to sign up?
I don't know why jdownloader isn't working, but I'll see if I can compress the size of the export more.
