The secretary of defense used to be called the secretary of war, they changed it for PR reasons right around the same time we changed the term propaganda to PR. I appreciate the honesty.

The term "politically correct" was born out of this. It describes the process in which bad things are made more palatable through renaming. Other examples include:
- war profiteering -> military industrial complex
- imperialism -> spreading democracy
- person killed by police -> officer-involved shooting
- schools experiencing de facto segregation -> inner-city schools
- white neighborhoods -> affluent neighborhoods

It was originally called the War Department. The Dulles boys thought the Defense Department was better for PR.

I mean it actually used to be the Secretary of War. The United States only started calling it the Secretary of "Defense" in the post-war shakeup. It's a Cold War artifact.
Secretary of Peace was still too on the nose but I could see it now
