Greenland says it will turn to China if US and EU shun its mining sector

Either do it or dont. US and EU only care about exploiting Greenland, and they are not going to come back with a better offer if you threaten to turn to China

Greenland gave a huge mineral concession to a Chinese conglomerate about 20-15 years ago. The plan was to construct a huge mine staffed by Chinese workers. Greenland's labour movement was strongarmed into exempting the Chinese workers from Greenlandic collective agreements and labour laws. From the Greenlandic point of view the mine project wasn't ideal but it represented a hope of desperately needed economic diversification and development.

The project eventually failed. They managed to mine a bit of metals but the challenging Greenlandic climate and geography meant that the mine was never profitable and was shut down.

China: hey Greenland how's it going? Want to make a deal that will benefit us both?

Greenland: hmm, let me think about it.

China: Okay!

EU: We can't let these guys make deals with China! We must heavily pressure them and make them fall in line!

US: you can't make a deal with China! I will take your country instead! Fall in line!

Greenland: Wow, these EU and US guys suck, now I'm more inclined to make a deal with China so I don't have to deal with them.

And thus, the self fulfilling Chinese prophecy of "do nothing, win" completes

the US absolutely wants to exploit greenland's minerals, they just want to annex the place and sit on it till it gets meltier.

honetly this seems like baiting the US when they ought to be keeping a low profile as ole' Don's big brain has moved on to other concerns
