The official history is that it was started to make western Europeans stop hating eachother (with the unsaid purpose of allowing them to concentrate on hating the USSR instead).

Not NATO by itself but it was founded during the post war period to consolidate the ranks in western europe and “smooth out” historical divisions.
Well that proves once and for all that NATO is a force for evil.
