Andrea Salsedo's Body Found (1920)
Mon May 03, 1920
Andrea Salsedo (1881 - 1920) was an Italian anarchist and associate of influential anarchist Luigi Galleani who died on this day in 1920, after falling 14 stories from a government building while being detained by police.
A committed anarchist since his youth, Salsedo became involved in local politics and was part of the anarchist club Circolo Sociale founded by Galleani, who was living in exile at that time. There, he met Galleani and supported him in the creation, distribution of, and writing for his magazine "Cronaca Sovversiva".
All associates of Galleani were put under surveillance by the U.S. government because of suspected bombings by anarchists, typically targeting wealthy capitalists or building associated with them.
On February 25th, 1920, Salsedo was arrested, held without any allowed communication or trial for eight weeks, and beaten. On May 3rd, 1920, his body was discovered on the ground outside the office where he was held, presumably having fallen 14 stories. The cause of his death, suicide or homicide, remains disputed.
