It's a show of force to dissuade anyone like Iran (active in Syria right now) from getting any silly ideas. Beyond that I don't think the US will step foot there, nor does Israel need their help to crush the Hamas terrorists.

Americans were killed in this attack, and the US gives Israel absolute support. There is absolutely zero need to fish for an excuse to attack Gaza.
It's probably to send a signal to Iran to not get any ideas of getting further involved and lend some support to Israel. Not everything has to be a conspiracy.
